VeggieTales Episodes Based on Bible Stories

Updated on June 24, 2010

About VeggieTales

VeggieTales is an animated series of shows with the characters being mostly anthropomorphic veggies with the occasional anthropomorphic fruit. Each episode or movie teaches Christian morals with entertaining plots that appeal to kids around ages 3 to 8. The episodes often include Silly Songs with Larry the Cucumber along with catchy songs that are within the plots. The episodes and movies always have a moral it reinforces/teaches. This is sometimes achieved through plots that are parodies such as the Wizard of Has being a parody of the Wizard of Oz. Other times the moral is taught by telling a VeggieTales version of a Bible story. In this case the episode is based on a Bible story, but is reinvented to make it entertaining for kids to watch while keeping the important aspects of the story in tact.

List of VeggieTales Episodes Based on Bible Story

While all episodes of VeggieTales includes at least some minor direct Bibical reference or actually tells a Biblical story in tact within a separate plot (i.e. the story of Easter being told in a one of the scenes in An Easter Carol), there are many that are almost entirely retellings of Biblical stories. Here is a list of the VeggieTales Episodes and Movie that teach morals through a plot inspired by a Bible story with some VeggieTales twists.

Abe and the Amazing Promise: The first part of this VeggieTales episode tells the story of Abraham and Sara waiting to have the child God promised them. This episode teaches about patience.

Are You My Neighbor?: This episode of VeggieTales teaches about loving one’s neighbor through a VeggieTales version of The Good Samaritan.

Dave and the Giant Pickle: Is about the little guy defeating the big guy and recreates the story of David and Goliath to teach about self-esteem.

Duke and the Great Pie War: This episode is related to two different Biblical stories. One is the story of Ruth and the other is the story of the childhood of Moses and Miriam. The lesson in this episode is loving one’s family.

Esther…The Girl Who Became Queen: This episode teaches about courage with its VeggieTales telling of the Biblical story of Esther.

Gideon: Tuba Warrior: This episode tells the story of Gideon and teaches about trusting God.

Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie: This was the first VeggieTales movie. The movie tells the basic Biblical story of Jonah in a VeggieTales context. The moral being that God is forgiving and gives second chances and we should do the same.

Josh and the Big Wall!: This is based on the story of Joshua and the Battle of Jericho in the Bible. This episode teaches about obedience.

King George and the Ducky: This episode is loosely based on the Biblical story of David and Bathsheba. It teaches about selfishness.

Moe and the Big Exit: This episode is a sequel to The Ballad of Little Joe and retells the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. It teaches about following directions (a similar theme to the obedience taught in Josh and the Big Wall).

Rack, Shack, and Benny: This episode deals with peer pressure and is based on the Biblical story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

The Ballad of Little Joe: This episode tells the Biblical story of Joseph with a VeggieTales story set in the Old West. It teaches about facing hardship.

Where’s God When I’m Scared?: This is the first VeggieTales episode. It is based on the story of Daniel and the Lion’s Den. This episode deals with handling fear.

scratch my previous comment. The lions den was a separate "episode", but it did appear on the scared segment. My bad. I was thinking of Jr. talking to the Frankencelery stalk and was all "That wasn't about Daniel..."

Daniel in the Lion's den wasn't "Where's God When I'm S-scared?" It had its own episode, though the name escapes me a the moment. However I do remember the little song/dance performed by the onion stalks "Oh no, what we gonna do? The King likes Daniel more than me and you~!"

my nit-picking aside, I'm glad you made this hub! I love the Veggitales gang. Not only are they original in creativity, but they demonstrate clever stories that tie into biblical accounts. King George and the Ducky made me laugh when Jr. Asparagus is in a bathtub on the roof, just as Bethsheba was bathing on her rooftop. (and who can resist the silly songs?)

I absolutely love VeggieTales and my 16 month old daughter does as well. We have probably watched Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie no less than ten times since buying it a few months ago. Great Hub!

I have had the pleasure of meeting and planning an event with the staff of the Big Idea company a number of years ago. They are just as wonderful as their movies are!
