We Have Just a Moment to Live
Since we had our children I have seen how fast time moves. But time does seem illusive. I hear people say: ‘I don’t have enough hours in the day.’ The Bible also tells us that life is short. This is why we must value and take advantage of every moment
Our Lives Are Like The Morning Mist
James 4:14 How do you know what is going to happen tomorrow? For the length of your lives is as uncertain as the morning mist—now you see it; soon it is gone.
The length of our lives is uncertain. This is one aspect we cannot be sure of. If you knew your life would end tomorrow, would live any differently today? Almost everyone would say yes.
James speaks of our lives and says: ‘Now you see it, and soon it is gone.’ This window of physical experience is ours to enjoy.
Time has a way of vanishing on us.
Job 9:25-26 My life passes swiftly away … My years disappear like swift ships, like the eagle that swoops upon its prey.
Isn’t it strange that it feels like every years goes faster than the last. As we move through life, it feels like time begins to accelerate. Time seems to disappear. This is the reality that most people experience.
Psalm 90:5–6 We glide along the tides of time as swiftly as a racing river and vanish as quickly as a dream. We are like grass that is green in the morning but mowed down and withered before the evening shadows fall.
That is why we must grab hold of every moment.
Our Days Are Few
It may feel like you are here forever. It may feel like you are immortal. This is especially true of young people. BUT our days are few. When you are in something, it may feel long, but with hindsight it is only a moment.
Job 14:2 How frail is man, how few his days … He blossoms for a moment like a flower—and withers; as the shadow of a passing cloud, he quickly disappears.
Our lives are compared to the shadow of a passing cloud. How are you using the days you have been given?
Our Earthly Experience
Remember we are not earthly beings having a spiritual experience, but we are spiritual beings having an earthly experience. We are here just for a moment and we are strangers in this land.
1 Chronicles 29:15 For we are here for but a moment, strangers in the land as our fathers were before us; our days on earth are like a shadow, gone so soon, without a trace.
God wants us to know and experience Him in a special way during these fleeting moments. Life makes sure that our limited days are consumed with busyness. This short earthly experience is a special time to know God in a special way.
Today And That Day
This is what Michael Cassidy has written in his diary:
“I only have two days in my life, today and that day”
Today is the opportunity that you have in your hands. This moment to the only thing you can be sure of. What will you do with it?
Psalm 39:4 Lord, help me to realize how brief my time on earth will be. Help me to know that I am here for but a moment more.
The other thing we can be sure of is that day, when we will go and be with Jesus.
1 John 2:17 And this world is fading away, and these evil, forbidden things will go with it, but whoever keeps doing the will of God will live forever.
We are spiritual beings. As such we have the capacity to live forever. Our earthly experience might be fleeting, but our spiritual experience will never end. Everything comes and goes, but God remains. That is why we can trust God so completely.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Seize The Moment
Take advantage of this moment of life. Grab hold of it with both hands. Don’t be one of those who says: ‘When I have the time’ That is one thing you are not sure of!
Make the time to pursue and do the things that are important. Don’t let the urgent always cloud the important. God has given you today. What will you do with it?
- That kindness you always wanted to show but never got to do…
- That time you wanted to spend with those you love…
- That aspect in which you wanted to obey the Holy Spirit...
