What Core Message Did Jesus Christ Preach?

What is Jesus Christ’s principle message and what did He tell His disciples to preach? Let us go back to the Bible and see Jesus’ own statements regarding His mission on earth and what message He told His disciples to preach.

There is always a reason or purpose for which things are done. This purpose is introduced at the beginning of a mission and also emphasized at the conclusion. Jesus mission statement is recorded in Mathew 4:17. His last words, which became The Great Commission was “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to the whole creation”.

We can see that the message Jesus introduced and wanted his followers to preach in the Great Commission is the single most important topic or message that Christians should be preaching today. What is that message?

John The Baptist - The Introducer of Jesus

Before we see Jesus’ own mission statement, let us go back to the account of John The Baptist, the person who introduced Jesus Christ. The Bible recorded this in Mathew Chapter 3, that John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand...I baptize you with water for repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I,...He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire".

John the Baptist was the last of the Old Testament prophets and the introducer of the Messiah. His introductory statement was "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand". This indicates that the person who is coming after John, whom he referred to as "mightier" than himself, will have something to do with the topic he introduced - the kingdom of heaven.

Jesus' Mission Statement

Jesus returned from the wilderness in the power of the Spirit to carry out His divinely appointed mission. His mission statement was the first public statement He made and is found in Mathew 4:17

"Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand".

This was the same message that His introducer John the Baptist introduced Him with. It is the message of the kingdom of God. Mathew 4:23 further explains that He (Jesus) went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

The Great Commission to Preach the Gospel of the Kingdom

The four Gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John all recorded Jesus Ministry and the key message Jesus preached was about the Gospel of the Kingdom of God. Some of these Scriptures are:

  • "But seek first the kingdom of God and His Righteousness..." (Mathew 6:33)
  • "And as you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand'" (Mathew 10:7). Jesus instruction when sending out His disciples to preach.
  • "I must preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent". (Luke 4:43)
  • But when the multitudes knew, they followed Him; and He received them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God...(Luke 9:11).
  • "The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it" (Luke 16:16)

Jesus did not come to establish a religion, tell His followers to preach a religion nor did He preach about Himself. The message of the Kingdom is of utmost importance as that is the message that Jesus preached and also wants to be preached. The church today majors on faith, love, salvation, prayer, Christian living, etc, but the message of the kingdom of God is not give prominence.

The message about the kingdom is about restoring God's Plan A as God originally intended for man in Genesis Chapters 1 & 2.

Kejanny- I am a great fan of Myles Munore's teachings on the Kingdom of God and have been since 2008. I do have his Kingdom serise books up to number three. And I know he wrote others too. Myles is such a great teacher and I have the utmost repect for him and his family. And I've lost count of the number of his programs I have watched. His teachings has lead me to a much better understanding of God word as it relates to God as a King and His Kingdom. God bless Myles Munroe and you.

Hi Graceinus, praise God for you. I come from a very religious family background and I'll be honest that in my earlier years, I never really read and understood the Bible myself. 10 years after I became a born-again Christian, I attended a week-long Myles Munroe seminar in the Holy Land (2009) and that has totally changed my understanding of the Bible and Jesus' message. I thank God for Myles Munroe whom God is using to bring this buried message to His Church in this century.
