What Does The Bible Say About Stress

Updated on October 26, 2014

What is stress

With today’s heavy demands and fast paced lifestyle it is virtually impossible to avoid stress in our lives. For most of us stress is a way of life and we simply survive living with this stress in our life. But it is how we deal with stress that can be good or bad. Stress can be a motivator to help us do our best or it can put a lot of undo pressure on you and your body and cause you harm.

Stress is a normal physical response to events in our lives that make us feel upset, or in danger, or threatened in some way. Stress kicks in our adrenaline and causes us to get focused, alert and ready to defend ourselves if need be.

Stress for most of us causes many problems for our health and wellbeing. Stress causes major headaches, high blood pressure, chest pain, insomnia, digestive problems and many more health related issues.

So what can we do to overcome stress in our lives? In todays society there are thousands of books of how to deal with stress, there are many medications people take for stress, and therapist are making millions of dollars on trying to help people deal with stress.

Now lets look at another option that we can go to help each and every one of us overcome stress that dominates our life.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

What does the Bible say to do with our stress?

Most major translations of the bible does not specifically use the word stress, the bible does talk about anxiety, worry, fear, and how we are to handle these things in our life.

Many people worry about money, materialism, their marriage, children, their spouse, addictions, and the list can go on and on. We all tend to worry which causes stress to build in our life which then causes our bodies to break down and become weak and sickly. When we focus on our stressors and we become weak and tired we allow an open portal for the devil to move in and take over because we have taken our focus off of God and put the focus on our problems.

The bible says “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Matthew 6:25 “

But life is full of many concerns and worries which lead to anxiety. In today’s uncertain economy we tend to be anxious about our finances. We worry about whether or not we will have a job tomorrow or we have anxiety about our children and their future. There are so many things that we do focus on that does cause us to be anxious on a daily basis. But the bible tells us not to be anxious but to pray.

The bible says “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7 and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7”

When we are hit every day with negative experiences and attacks and everything seems overwhelming we need to stop and take a deep breath and focus on something that is positive and uplifting to us. We need to fight back against the enemy Satan and take back our thoughts and take control of them, we need to pray to God and leave the problems and the fears and stressors at the foot of the cross.

“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

The Bible tells us how to be free from stress.

To be free from stress we first know what our purpose here is on earth is and our reason for existing. If we don't know this then our life is very meaningless and we have no purpose to exist. God created each of us for a special purpose in mind. God created each of us for a reason, we may not know what that reason is at this time but God just did not put us here to do nothing. We need to be in constant communication through prayer with the Lord Jesus Christ in order to find out what our purpose here on earth is.

Stress a lot of times is from the fact we do not know what our purpose here is, we don’t know who we are or where we are going. Even Christians that I come in contact with even question their salvation and have trouble believing that they are saved. Many times we struggle with anxiety and fear and worry because we do not trust in the Lord to be Father and our Savior. We tend to carry the burden of what we are dealing with, finances, children, life, marriage or whatever else we are dealing with instead of laying it at the foot of the cross and letting God take control and fix or heal what it is we are dealing with.

Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Mt. 11:28-30).

God gave his own son to die a terrible agonizing death for us that we may live with him in heaven one day. But as we live here in on earth are we willing to lay down our lives and take his yoke upon us? If we do not walk with him then we are choosing to walk with the devil, there is no middle of the road, we cannot walk at one moment with the Lord and the next walk with Satan. Many times we fight this internal fight with our conscience and this causes undo stress in our lives. This fight can lead to us questioning our salvation, but the Lord is gracious and all we have to do is call out to him and he is there to forgive us of our sins and bring us back into his flock. We never have to stress about our salvation according to the Bible, God clearly states that we have eternal life through Jesus Christ at all times.

"The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 6:23).

"For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast" (Ephesians:2:8, 9).

We need to hold these versus close to us and repeat them every day. We need to not worry about things and cause stress to come into our lives. God has a plan for each of us and we need to focus on him and be in harmony with him and he will lead us down the road that he has laid out for us. If we put 100% trust in him we should never have any worry, doubt, fear, or stress in our lives.
