What I learned from Yoda - Jedi Training 101

Updated on August 13, 2012

Master Yoda teachings

A wise person will look to a mentor or teacher to help out in tough times or to gain intuitive guidance and wisdom. I have many important teachers and spiritual masters that I turn to for inspiration, either by turning to their written word or through modern teaching in video or internet sites. But I also have a very special teacher that has imparted deep wisdom and insight to me. I was first introduced to this special little green man while watching the Star Wars movie sagas. Of course, the wise sage I speak of is, Master Yoda.

Besides Star Wars being iconic with its special effects and tremendous creativity, for me the most fascinating part of the movies are the symbolic, philosophical and metaphorical wisdoms imparted within the stories. I love to seek inspiration through new and creative ways. Sure, I can read inspirational books and scripture and be moved to tears by these ancient insights, but to be stirred and excited by a movie character, (outside of the usual empathy I feel for movie characters), was new to me too. So, I just went with it and I am now one of Yoda's Jedi Knights in training and I look to Yoda frequently to gain inspiration and “Jedi” strength of spirit. (Yes, my family thinks I’m weird for occasionally quoting Yoda.)

I’d like to share some highlights of my favorite Yodaisms and why they mean so much to me. It’s not so much that Yoda or Star Wars has “new” insights, it’s just that it is done in such a powerful way and using the movie story helped to just fill me with new energy and motivation.

My first and most favorite Yoda wisdom is: Do or Do Not, there is no try. - This tiny little saying was shared when Luke was about to give up, while attempting super human mind control to lift his ship out of a swamp. This Yodaism reminds me that when we say we are going to just try, this is our small minded ego keeping us small by giving us a mulligan before we even begin. It’s that voice that says, It’s OK to be mediocre, at least you tried. To “try” is to doubt the self and to harbor fear. This tiny saying is something I remember every day when I feel overwhelmed, when tasks of the day are bigger than the day, when my spiritual self battles my ego self. Do or DO NOT – make your choice.

Yoda wisdom #2: Named must your fear be before banish it you can. - This is a huge principle for me in my personal spiritual journey. In fact, it is so important for personal growth, that I talk about this principle extensively in my book Finding Home, Breaking Free from Limits. Without the recognition of the fears, limits, or barriers in our life, how can we ever hope to transcend them? When we struggle to make changes to improve ourselves and our lives by turning away from our fear and limits, they will just keep following us around like a creepy shadow. This Yodaism is a principle that is not traditionally discussed in spiritual circles but one I think is critical to gain enlightenment and true spiritual awakening, and I guess Yoda agrees.

Yoda wisdom #3: Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the ship.” - Seriously it would take me about 5 pages to share everything I love about this quote. Since I can’t do that here, I just invite you to ponder this quote deeply with me and think about these summary items that you might be able to apply this great wisdom to.

The power of the Spirit

The Divine Self

Force = God, Creator, Source, Divine Love, Universe

Judgment = Fear, Doubt, Limit

Oneness

Understanding the largeness of our soul

Divine Parallels in natural world

God is ALL – including us

Yoda Wisdom #4: Luke: What's in there?
Yoda: Only what you take with you. -
Wow! We experience only what we take into “the cave” with us. If you carry around your fears, doubts, anxieties, anger, judgments into your next moment, you will keep facing those feelings/emotions with every step you take. When we carry the torch of light, love and Divine power with us, a path will be illuminated for us. Again, your choice.

Well, I could keep this up all day, there are so many other great Yoda quotes that inspire me. But I’ll leave it up to your imagination which Yoda quotes he meant especially for you. Overall Master Yoda with his wise old face and cute big ears has provided me with volumes of spiritual and philosophical fodder to chew on and all done behind the fun, spectacular story of a hero and his band of star warriors.

I guess I should really be thanking the Star War writers for the scripts that provided all these amazing wisdoms and inspirations, but that wouldn’t be any fun. Besides, if I close my eyes really tight, I see myself lifting the ship out of the swamp, then I hear, ever so faintly, “Feel the force Joleen.”
