What are the Qualities of the Zodiac Signs in Astrology?

The Qualities or Quadruplicities

The qualities of the Zodiac are divided into three sections which contain four Zodiac signs in each. They are Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable, and each possesses a sign in each of the four elements, Fire, Earth, Air, or Water.

The qualities are separated by 90 degrees. Astrological aspects prove that a 90 degree difference (a square) or a 180 degree difference (an opposition) generally don’t get along unless there are other, more positive, aspects in the natal charts that make the two people more compatible.

Cardinal Zodiac Signs

Cardinal Quality

The Cardinal signs are the leaders of the Zodiac. In fact, they lead us into the seasonal changes. As element is represented as a Cardinal quality, those signs use their elements to demonstrate a particular style of leadership. Those who bear the Cardinal quality are self-motivators and usually initiate their own destiny. They are the people who pave the way for the rest. The Cardinal signs are the trailblazers. Even if they go off track and make mistakes, there is always an example set or lesson learned for those who prefer not to explore. They generally possess a great deal of self esteem and self assurance. These signs are usually active, and impatient. Often, they have difficulty in following through or ending what they have originally started. These signs include:

  • Aries, the ram, begins Spring and is the first sign of the Zodiac (Fire element)
  • Cancer, the crab, begins Summer (Water element)
  • Libra, the scales, begins Autumn (Air element)
  • Capricorn, the goat, begins Winter (Earth element)

Fixed Zodiac Signs

Fixed Quality

The Fixed signs are stubborn. Once they make a decision or have an idea, there is no changing their minds. They are methodical, and determined. These signs won’t stop until they have reached their goals. They also make great leaders, but sometimes come across rigid and inflexible. The rules are the rules and there isn’t much wiggle room when a Fixed sign is in charge. They are, however, respected by the others for their sense of purpose. The Fixed signs also take orders well and are dedicated to whatever the cause may be. They also delegate well, but with high expectations. They are stable, powerful, and virtually unable to persuade. These signs include:

  • Taurus, the bull, in mid Spring (Earth element)
  • Leo, the lion, in mid Summer (Fire element)
  • Scorpio, the eagle, in mid Autumn (Water element)
  • Aquarius, the water bearer, in mid Winter (Air element)

Mutable Zodiac Signs

Mutable Quality

The Mutable signs are always changing. They are extroverts in nature and energetic. They are the busy bodies of the Zodiac, and can see things from more than one point of view. They are easily adaptable and great communicators. The Mutable signs are represented by duality. An interesting fact about the Mutable signs is that they all end on a seasonal change. This could possibly explain their ease with change in general. These signs include:

  • Gemini, the twins, ends Spring (Air element)
  • Virgo, the maiden (and a bird), ends Summer (Earth element)
  • Sagittarius, the archer, ends Autumn (Fire element)
  • Pisces, the two fish, ends Winter (Water element)

The Zodiac Qualities

Natal Chart Importance

As mentioned in articles before, there are many, many areas to look at when determining the personality, emotions, and actions of an individual. The sun sign, rising sign, and moon sign are very important.

There are other planets, houses, transits, aspects, and time frame in the individual’s life to take into consideration. A Natal Chart is an exact picture of the sky when a person is born. The exact date, time and place of birth are extremely important in order to have an accurate chart. Professional Astrologers can read a natal chart and explain many reasons why people act and think as they do.

Thank you for your interest in my writing. I certainly hope the read was helpful and entertaining. I like to learn from others. Please feel free to leave a suggestion or a comment.
