What does it mean to Rest in the Lord?

It is finished

  • It is finished

To rest in the Lord is to declare that something is finished. In Genesis 1 the bible declares that in the beginning God created the heaven and the Earth and on the seventh day he rested. This rest was not because he was tired as humans can become tired, but that he was finished with creating his creation. For people today this means when one has declared something in their life finished, they rest about it.

People can rest about a personal problem because they believe it is finished through believing the Word of God. When facing financial difficulty, rest! (It is finished) because my God shall supply all our need. When sick, rest! ( It is finished) because by his stripes we are healed. Another meaning for rest is to die; Jesus was summoned to come to the aid of his friend Lazarus who was sick, but he abode where he was for two more days.

Finally Jesus declared to go raise Lazarus from his sleep and the disciples said if he sleeps he is doing well but Jesus spoke to them plainly that Lazarus was dead. Even though he had physically died Jesus said he was sleep or resting because he was going to wake him up just as if he was physically asleep. The bible talks about the flesh man or the carnal nature that must be put to death daily. According to Romans eight this is done by walking in the Spirit.

One must pray, stay in the bible along with obeying its instruction to walk in the Spirit. Rest can only be associated with death and it is not until the flesh is dead can one really declare it is finished. Jesus from the cross said it is finished! And he died or fell asleep because he rose again the third day!

The will of God declares it is finished

  • The will of God declares it is finished

Jesus from the cross said it is finished because he had completed the will of the Father through his redemptive work. Rest concludes that a person is in the will of God while worry frustration and anxiety is outside of that will.

1 John 5:14 declares this is the confidence that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us and if he hears us then we have the petitions that we desired of him. The bible is his written will and as a person believes that will through his word then it is finished! People who lean to their own understanding about things without acknowledging God will not rest because only God is omni-present, omniscience and omnipotent to finish a thing.

A person can rest in the Lord knowing that he has obligated himself to finish what he starts in a person’s life. Philippians 1:6 declares he that has begun a good work in you shall also perform it (complete it) until the day of Jesus Christ.

He is alpha and omega, the beginning and the end and the first and the last. He knows the end from the beginning so he always knows what he is going to do. In feeding the five thousand the bible said Jesus knew in advance what he would do while the disciples were still trying to figure things out. This is why rest is available to the people of God. No need to worry because he knows what he is going to do and he never reacts but responds because he knows what he is going to do in every situation confronting a person.

Be silent to the Lord

  • Be silent to the Lord

Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass. (Psalm 37:7)

The Hebrew word for rest means to be silent to the Lord. The heart reveals if a person is at rest or no through what comes out of their mouth. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matthew 12:34) and people who murmur and complain are not resting in the Lord.

Joshua and the children of Israel were silent as they walked around the walls of Jericho for six days under the instructions of the Lord. In the midst of an impossible situation they were at rest because they were walking in obedience to the Lord. No matter how big the obstacle wall is obedience while dealing with that wall brings rest because one knows only God can flatten the wall of life’s problems.

Waiting patiently for him

  • Waiting patiently for him

Finally resting in the Lord is remaining satisfied while serving him. Many people are waiting for the manifestation of what they are believing for instead of waiting on the Lord. When the Lords timing comes he will bring the answer.

Waiting on the Lord reveals rest and contentment because the word wait means to wait as a waiter does in a restaurant. They serve others so in comparison the Lord wants people to serve him while waiting on him to bring the answer and this is a resting
