What Freedom Is and What Freedom Is Not

Updated on January 23, 2018

Freedom is NOT a state of no rules, no authority, or no obligations. To believe so is to be guilty of the law of ignorance.

Hoshea (Hosea) 4:6--”My people have perished for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being priests for Me. Since you have forgotten the Torah of your Elohim, I also forget your children.”

YeHoVaH’s heart cries out for us because we are like the blind leading the blind when we refuse to learn YeHoVaH’s Word. Yeshua spoke something of a similar nature in Luqas (Luke) 6:39; “And He spoke a parable to them, ‘Is a blind able to lead a blind? Shall they not both fall into a pit?” What YeHoVaH spoke, through Hoshea, was that our ignorance can be our destruction. To not know something because you haven’t learned it yet is one thing; but, to know a thing and reject that thing is something entirely different altogether. To be unsaved and not know what YeHoVaH commands is one thing; but, to know the Word of YeHoVaH and yet still cling to your life of lawlessness is entirely different altogether. So, what is it that we seem to be rejecting? The Laws of YeHoVaH. And, let me make something perfectly clear, these are not the Laws of Mosheh; Mosheh was merely the human mouthpiece. Furthermore, to reject the Laws of YeHoVaH, His Torah, is to reject YeHoVaH.

Acts 17:30-31--”Truly, then, having overlooked these times of ignorance, Elohim now commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has set a day on which He is going to judge the world in righteousness by a Man whom He has appointed, having given proof of this to all by raising Him from the dead.”

YeHoVaH does NOT wink at sin, and He certainly does NOT say, “Humans will be humans.”, much like mothers across the globe excuse their sons’ behaviors when they say, “Boys will be boys.” YeHoVaH never condones sin in any way at any time for any person.

Freedom is NOT a state of no rules, no authority, or no obligations. To believe so is to be guilty of the law of ignorance.

I have three children, of eight, who still live in my home. Two of them are teenagers- Michaela, who is 16, and Jackson, who is 14. Then there is little Alana, who is ten years old, and, I guess, considered a tweenager, whatever that means. If you have children, no doubt you have heard, as much as I have, “I can’t wait until I have my own house, then I can do whatever I want whenever I want!” Are we allowing our children to believe this fallacy? No, they cannot have whatever they want whenever they want. There are still rules (in their own homes, in their workplaces, for relationships, et cetera), there are still authority figures (law enforcement officials, bosses, et cetera), and there are still obligations (i.e.-they have to be responsible for their own bills and lives).

Another example- traffic laws. What if there were no traffic laws? Would there be freedom in the void of traffic laws? No, there would not be freedom, there would be utter madness. Could you imagine a world without traffic laws; running red lights, going however fast you wanted even in school zones and neighborhoods where young children run and play, or people driving in whatever lanes they choose to drive in with no thought to oncoming traffic? WHere is the freedom in greatly outrageous vehicle insurance premiums? Where is the freedom in having to buy new vehicles because you’ve destroyed all your previous vehicles in accidents and crashes because you did not obey the traffic laws? No, this is not freedom … this is utter madness.

We just cannot be left to our own devices; we must have rules, we must have a system of authority, and there will always be obligations. Divre haYamim Bet (2 Chronicles) 7:13-14--”IF I shut up the heavens and there is no rain, or IF I command the locusts to devour the land, or IF I send the pestilence among My people, and my people whom My Name is called, shall humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their evil ways, THEN I shall hear from the heavens, and forgive their sin and heal their land.” (Capitalization of IF and THEN done by myself to show emphasis.) IF and THEN … rules, authority, and obligation.

Have you ever stopped to think what would have happened had Yeshua not done His work on the cross? We would still be slaves to sin, instead of freed men, women, and children.

We have indeed become a free people. What this freedom is NOT, however, is a state of no rules, no authority, or no obligations. To believe so is to be guilty of the law of ignorance. We have been freed from a life of slavery to sin to obey YeHoVaH and His Torah as we are full of His forgiveness and grace. We do not obey YeHoVaH’s Torah for forgiveness and grace but because we are forgiven and given grace. Yeshua has redeemed us, and we have the leading guidance of Ruach HaKodesh to help us along the way. We love, obey, serve, and trust the Master Yeshua ha-Meshiach. If we love, obey, serve, and trust the Master Yeshua ha-Meshiach, we will obey YeHoVaH’s Torah.
