What is Real Meditation?
To meditate means to concentrate the mind on something. You can meditate on a naked woman, a mountain, on money – on anything. But spiritual life means meditating upon God. Have your mind on Him, think of Him. Think of pleasing Him. Remember His beautiful Transcendental form. Remember His instructions. By chanting God’s names you can easily remain in constant remembrance of Him. Softly chanting His Names will help you remember Him when you sit quietly by yourself; chanting and singing His Names as you drive will help you remember Him on your way to school or work. Since you can chant God’s Names anytime, anywhere while you are moving or still, chanting is really the most effective means of remembering the Lord. Of course, those who practice Bhakti Yoga – the cultivation of love for God use other method as well. Some set up an altar in their home for worshipping the Transcendental Form of the Lord; some offer flowers and vegetarian foodstuff to the Lord; some study scripture; and so on.
This process of bhakti yoga is really very scientific. It is a person’s conscious manipulation of his body in order to develop a particular consciousness- God consciousness. It is based on the fact that the external affects the internal, and vice versa. The bhakti yogi, unlike the so called meditators, does not believe that he can do whatever he wants externally, yet develop or maintain God-consciousness. He knows that God-consciousness must be cultivated by how he lives his life. And the foundation of almost everyone’s life is sound vibration. All day long people hear and chant; what they hear and what they chant affects their consciousness, one way or another. A person who recognizes this fact begins to see the importance of controlling the sound vibrations that they hear and chant.
