What is Spirituality? How to Grow Spiritually?

Updated on May 16, 2015

Spiritual growth is the real growth

What is spirituality?

What exactly is spirituality? Most people think that spirituality is being a religious person. They think, people who go to churches, mosques and temples are spiritual. Besides, they think those who read Bible or Quran or Bhagavad Gita are spiritual. The fact of the matter is they needn't be spiritual. You may be visiting the church and reading the Bible daily and yet not spiritual. On the other hand those who don't go to churches or mosques or temples and don't read Bible or Quran or Bhagavad Gita can be spiritual.Do you think it's a bit confusing?

Spirituality is getting connected to something bigger than ourselves. It's like getting connected to the Universal Energy, the God. It's about realizing the God inside us. It's about loving all the living things in this wonderful world. It's about realizing the truth that love is God.

Defining the indefinable

It's hard to define the indefinable "spirituality'. Different people define 'spirituality' differently. Different religions may define it differently too. However, most people would accept that spirituality is the awareness that there's something far greater than us. It's about to know the supreme power that created this Universe. It's about learning the art of living and realizing the purpose and meaning of life. Religion may or may not help you to grow spiritually. It all depends on how you use the religion effectively to travel further in the path of spiritual development.

Why should you grow spiritually?

Why should one seek spiritual development anyway? What are the benefits of spirituality? Spiritual growth is all about increasing the level of consciousness in you. When you grow spiritually, you will realize the meaning and purpose of your life. Why did you come into this world? You will be able to know the answer to this question. Spiritual development can increase your concentration, level of consciousness and intuition power. You will become more open, calm and loving. You will realize the God within you. When you get connected to that supreme power or the Universal Energy or God, you will experience boundless joy and happiness. That's the ultimate happiness one can enjoy in life.

How to grow spiritually?

Most people use meditation techniques to grow spiritually. When you do meditation regularly, your conscious level will increase considerably. Ancient Indian sages used to go to forests and do meditation for years. Eventually, they derived tremendous concentration, intuition and mystic powers. They used these powers for good purposes. They were able to live longer and happier. They were able to realize God. They became superhuman beings.

We are living in a fast, highly competitive and materialistic world today. It's not easy to progress spiritually to higher levels these days. However, we can achieve spiritual development to some extent even these days. Even that small spiritual growth would give us enormous energy, happiness and healthy life. Therefore it's important to grow spiritually as much as possible in your life.
