What is the difference between the gift of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of Holy Spirit?

Updated on June 17, 2011

I was one of those who did not know that there is a difference between the gift of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Light came when I was desperate for a miracle. I had to pray right and I knew that by praying in the Spirit I would pray the will of God. What God taught me is what I am about to share with you.

What is the Gift of the Holy Spirit?

The gift of the Holy Spirit is also referred to as the Promise of the Holy Ghost. The phrases are interchanged but they carry the same meaning. The timing differentiates the use of the phrases. Before the promise of the Holy Spirit is given it is referred to as the promise of the Holy Ghost. But after you have received the promise of the Holy Spirit it is referred to as the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is what God the Father promised through the prophet Joel saying, "It shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit." (Joe 2:28-29)So it is also known as the promise of the Father. Hence, the Holy Spirit Himself is a gift from our Father in heaven.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is poured out upon all flesh that acknowledges that there is a promise of the Holy Spirit. There is absolutely no discrimination when it comes to receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit. What I mean is that there is no Promise of the Holy Spirit for this and for that so that some would receive this and others that. The Promise of the Holy Spirit is one promise. Everyone receives the same gift of the Holy Spirit in the same measure and for the same purpose. I'll discuss the purpose of the gift of the Holy Spirit with you down the page.

You do not receive the promise of the Holy Spirit automatically after you receive Jesus Christ as your personal savior. Although in rare cases the Holy Spirit is poured out upon someone when he or she hears and receives the gospel. This happened at a Cornelius' house, a captain of the Roman Regiment. Whilst Apostle Peter was speaking words of salvation to the people that were gathered at Cornelius' house the Holy Ghost fell on all that were present. Nonetheless, a case like this is only mentioned once in the entire bible. The common experience of receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit is by first acknowledging Him and then through the prayer of an anointed man or woman of God the Holy Ghost falls upon the person receiving prayer.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is for every believer to receive as we might have noticed from the verse that we quoted from Joel that the Spirit is poured upon ALL flesh.

What are the gifts of the Holy Spirit?

When the Holy Spirit is poured out upon someone He brings with Him gifts. The gifts that the Holy Ghost comes with are referred to as the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are also sometimes referred to as the Ministry Gifts of the Holy Spirit. There are nine ministry gifts of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Bible although the gifts of the Holy Spirit cannot be limited to the nine. The nine ministry gifts are broken down into 3 categories: The Vocal gifts, the revelation gifts and the Power gifts.

Under the Vocal gifts of the Holy Spirit we have the gifts of prophecy, divers kinds of tongues, and the gift of interpretation of tongues.

Under the Power gifts of the Holy Spirit we have faith, gifts of healing, and the working of miracles.

Under the revelation gifts of the Holy Spirit we have the gifts of the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge and discerning of spirits.

The Holy Spirit also gives gifts in leadership, business, hospitality, marriage, crafts, etc.

How to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are received through two different ways. The first is through the baptism of the Holy Ghost. When you receive the gift of the Holy Spirit through baptism with the evidence of speaking in other tongues you are automatically endowed with the gift or gifts of the Holy Spirit as the Spirit wills. Everyone baptism in the Holy Ghost also has a gift given by the Holy Spirit. You usually discover the gifts of the Holy Spirit through your desires. The bible says that "It is God which works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."(Php 2:13) Therefore, what you always will to do might be your gift received from the Holy Spirit.

Secondly we receive gifts from the Holy Spirit through desiring for certain gifts. Now do not confuse the two. The first one is that you already have a gift and it is discovered through the desires that you have. You always feel being drawn to do certain things. But the second is you do not have the gift yet but you admire or envy those who operate in those gifts. The Holy Ghost does give us the desires of our hearts. So you can ask and receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit that you covet for.

What is the fruit of the Holy Spirit?

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is not a gift of the Holy Spirit. Believers who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit are known as the Temples of the Holy Spirit. That means that the Holy Spirit resides in them. The effect of the presence of the Holy Spirit in someone’s life produces the fruit of the Holy Spirit. The fruit of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Bible is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, and temperance. (Gal 5:22-23) Notice the bible does not say the fruits of the Holy Spirit as if you can have one or more of the fruits and be exempted from some. It says fruit, i.e. singular which means the fruit of the Holy Spirit is one fruit. Therefore, all the nine so called fruits of the Holy Spirit should be manifest all the time in a person claiming to have received the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The gift of the Holy Spirit verses the gifts of the Holy Ghost

The gift of the Holy Spirit is one gift whilst the gifts of the Holy Spirit are many.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is given by our Heavenly father whilst the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given by the Holy Ghost Himself.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is meant to be received by everyone that calls upon the name of the Lord whilst the gifts of the Holy Spirit are given as the Spirit wills.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is received before the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The received gift of the Holy Spirit comes with the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The gift of the Holy Spirit comes with signs of speaking in other tongues whilst the gifts of the Holy Spirit may not announce their presence.

The gift of the Holy Spirit confirms that the blessing of Abraham has come upon someone whilst the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for blessing others with the blessing of Abraham.

In conclusion, I would say that the salvation package is completed when one goes through the following experiences by faith.

1. You must accept the message of salvation. Accepting means sincerely believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and Lord of Lords that descended from Heaven, died for our sins, was buried and resurrected on the third day. And that He ascended and is sited on the right hand of God judging the dead and the living.

2. You must understand the meaning of baptism and be baptized by immersion in water.

3. You must be baptized in the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. That is, you must receive the Father’s promise of the gift of the Holy Spirit.

4. You must discover and operate the gifts of the Holy Spirit that the Holy Ghost has already endowed on you.

These four vital experiences complete the salvation package.

I took an audition to join our worship team. After playing 3 songs was told i did not pass and that music was not my gift and I should seek another ministry. Is it possible for a worship team leader to make that judgement after hearing only 3 short sections of 3 songs?

So believers who truly and wholeheartedly received Christ as their Lord and Savior don't have the gift, nor gifts of the Holy Spirit? Wow. Interesting doctrine. I wonder what your doctrine would be on salvation.
