Christians STOP Worshipping Preachers

Updated on February 2, 2017

Preachers vs God

It is difficult to watch Christians fall over popular Preachers and spiritual leaders like they are rock stars. Is God please with this? I don't believe so.

Of Jesus, Isaiah 53:3 says: He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

If Jesus was despised, why do we think spiritual leaders deserve such glory and praise? It is true that we are to honor those who deserve honor but nowhere in scripture does it say leaders deserve worship!

Celebrity Preachers

When God is not enough, Preachers and Pastors can become elevated to a place of celebrity status. As we seek to get closer to the Father, we must not get distracted, by the earthen vessel that is delivering the message!

It can be easy to get caught up in our spiritual leaders and forget they are only flesh, like ourselves. When they topple and fall, we are devastated, but reminded not to trust in the arm of flesh. We must guard our hearts so that we are not carried away by anything or anyone, that threatens to overshadow His place in our lives.

Exodus 34:14 For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God:

Why do we Need a Hero?

I remember when a famous preacher came to my town. The service was over an hour late, and everyone was eagerly waiting for everything to start. It was hot, the air conditioning didn't work and people were frustrated.

Finally, the guest preacher showed up, and people began to stand on their chairs, to get a look at the preacher. I thought this is not a rock concert, what is wrong with these people? Disgusted, I left the meeting.

When we honor a man or woman of God, this is biblical. When we worship and man or woman of God this has become idolatry, and we have become religious groupies. Many preachers have become bigger than life. The masses hanging on every word, and flocking to every meeting, some, who do not give their own Pastors such honor.

Don't Neglect your Pastors

The men and woman who labor day in and day out for our souls deserve great honor. The Pastors who teach us each Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, need our encouragement they need our support. They are there for us consistently, faithful sowing into our lives, praying for us, and fixing our bo-bos. We need to pour into them, as they pour into our lives.

Our home pastors are our spiritual parents, deserving honor, and our faithfulness. But when we return to our home Churches, all we have to give is gone. We return, emotionally and financially spent on our spiritual heroes.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.

God tells us to humble ourselves before the Lord and he will exhault us in due time. If we remember this, we will always remind the people we minister to, that we are nothing, and God is everything. When believers have an intimate relationship with the Father, they will not have the desire to run after something, other than God himself.

Stop Worshiping Spiritual Leaders

Prophetic Word to the Church

Why do you need a hero? You make men and woman of God lifted, and ascribe accolades to their works; you tell them "you are marvelous, you are so great, there is none like you".

You make them great swelling celebrities with up lifted heads. You make them fall, when they hear and begin to believe your words about them. Why am I not enough?

I am the Alpha and Omega, was God manifested in the flesh, I walked among you; I bleed and died that you may live forever. Why am I not enough? Why am I not enough?

Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

God is Worth to be Praised!

God and God Alone!

You nailed it! God gave us several warnings to guaard against "Idolotry", that it is one of Satan's suttle tactics causing us to stumble and loose focus of God. Thank you for the reminder and stand you've taken for the truth!

      Blessings Sis.

Your scripture at the end of this article says it all.

"Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might."

When we do this, we find our Hero and worship becomes the burning desire of hearts so that it pleases and glorifies Him. This puts the focus where it should be. Thanks for the inspiring article.

Wow! I couldn't agree more. The Holy Spirit is a comforter and teacher and accessible to everyone. You are right that there is nothing wrong with honoring someone who teaches something well, or ministers to you, but they are only the messenger. In politics and business, messengers are sent all around the world to do the bidding of their superiors. These messengers are housed and cared for - but not revered as if they were the company they represent. In religion, it is easy to get blind while still saying 'we see'. Peace.
