Is Money Bad For Christians?
What do the Bible tells us about Money?
Let's Ask the Bible!
According to Apostle Paul in his letter to Timothy;
" Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is uncertain, but to put their hope in God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. "
1 Timothy 6:17-18 NIV
The Bible tells us not to be arrogant nor to put our hope in wealth no matter how wealthy we are even if we have all the riches in the world because it is God who provided us with everything and without God we have nothing.
" You say ' I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked."
Revelations 3:17 NIV
A person who says " I am rich " and " I do not need a thing " do not realize that in the eyes of God they are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. And why is this? It is because they will never be happy and they will never be satisfied no matter how rich they are, even if they own luxury cars, castles, or even the world.
" Whoever loves money never has money enough; Whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. "
Ecclesiastes 5:10 NIV
Instead, we should use our money to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous in sharing with others. Because I believe that money is not bad and it is a blessing from God, Let us use the wealth that God gave us in doing good works, so we can have greater things. And these greater things are true happiness, love, blessings, and inheritance of the kingdom of God. Imagine how rich we are if we were to inherit the Kingdom of God where there is no sadness, sufferings, and death! Now that is what you call the best investment we can have. Isn't that the greatest treasure of all?
When Money is Bad
Is money a bad thing? Well, the answer is it depends. It can be a true blessing and it can be a curse. If it is used for good works, then it is definitely a blessing, but if it used for bad purposes, enough that it harms your spirituality or everybody around you or it has become your top priority and you have forgotten about God, then this is really bad. VERY BAD.
So how does Money makes us Bad?
1. When we make Money our Priority
" No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money. "
Luke 16:13 NIV
When we devoted ourselves to earning money, we lose time for God and we never have enough money to share with the poor because it is never enough for us and we keep working and working without thinking of God. And when our hard earned money is taken from us, we blame God but the truth is, it is our fault for not seeing what is truly important. We might feel miserable and possibly hate God and ask " Why have you taken everything that I have worked for?! "
But if we devoted ourselves to God, I tell you, you will be happy even without a penny. You are full even if you are hungry, you are warm even if you are cold, and then you will never have to worry because God will provide you with everything you need.
Money is not the most important thing in life. Let's read what our Lord Jesus Christ tells us;
" What good is it for a man to gain the whole world yet forfeit his soul? or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? "
Mark 8:36-37 NIV
Can money save our souls? Think about it. Can you pay the heaven so you can enter it or can you buy salvation through money? Only God has the power to save our souls not anything from this world. It is only our Father in heaven who can.
A man who trusts only in his wealth is destined to fall, but the righteous, because he has pleased God, will thrive and receive bountiful blessings. Like the Bible says;
" Whoever trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will thrive like a green leaf. "
Proverbs 11:28 NIV
Now Let us look at the example of the poor widow that Lord Jesus saw to see how to put God as a priority instead of money;
" Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. But a poor widow came and put in 2 very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a cent. Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said ' I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything -all she had to live on. "
Mark 12:41-44 NIV
Imagine that?! the poor widow is very poor yet she offers all she had. She could have bought herself food to eat, and clothes to wear during cold season but she chose to put God first and gave everything she has for God. And Lord Jesus Commended her for her wonderful deed. If she does not prioritize God, how can she do this? Can we follow her example? Let us examine ourselves and reflect.
Remember, we do not live for Money. We live and die for the Lord and we belong to him. We do not belong to Money or anything that belongs to the world.
" If we live, we live to the Lord: and if we die we die to the lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the lord. "
Romans 14:8 NIV
So we should make time so we could worship our God and not to take our time for our work, and other things. Take your time to read the Bible daily, and to pray, and to give thanks to God. If we have time for money, for work, for ourselves, and for others, why not take at least a little of our time for God?
We should also share the blessings God gave us to our poor brothers and sisters who suffer.
If we truly prioritize God over all things in our life, we can do this.
2. When we do Bad things because of Money
" People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs"
1 Timothy 6:9-10 NIV
Money in itself is not evil, but when you start to love money too much, it is the beginning of sin. The love for money corrupts anyone because it is the root of all kinds of evil. Having too much money, a person can be tempted to spend it for their foolish and harmful desires. Some use their money to smoke and drink alcohol to their heart's content, buy drugs just for pleasure, and spend money for their vices to satisfy their flesh. Some use their money to feed their sexual desires, others use their money to kill and inflict harm. Some people even steal just for money, kill for money, and they are prepared to do anything just for money. It is their greed and love for money that makes a money very very bad.
Let us see what Lord Jesus tells us about greed;
" Then he said to them, ' watch out! ' be on your guard against all kinds of Greed; A man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. "
Luke 12:15 NIV
Lord Jesus tells us to be on our guard against all kinds of greed, and why is this? Let's see what the Bible tells us;
" Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. "
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 NIV
The Bible says the greedy will not inherit the kingdom of God. And we all know that all the other sins mentioned above can start with the love of money and greed so let us love God instead so we can inherit the greatest wealth of all, the Kingdom of God.
