How to feel close to God again~Essential prayers for Christians: Feel closer to God

Updated on July 6, 2013

I've been wondering this myself lately. Many will say it's lack of going to church which is part of it, but it's not just church. Church is a place to go, but it has to start from inside before you can enjoy church or prayer. What is it? What is it that makes us Christians feel close to Jesus?

The main thing you have to do is to tell God you are sorry for sinning, and you love him and make up your mind to try and sin no more. Trust in His mercy, forgive yourself as well, and know that we are all weak humans who need forgiveness and graces from God.

Pray in your own words

Many times having someone pray for me and with me in their own words really helps. Other times I will pray a pray already made like the one below:

Prayer for an increase in love

My sovereign Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe and King of my heart, I prostrate myself before Your divine Majesty in adoration of Your divine Kingship.

O Jesus, may You be ever praised, blessed, glorified, and loved as supreme Lord and Ruler of all mankind. May Your Kingdom extend to all the ends of the earth, and may You establish Your throne in the hearts of all men.

My Lord and my God, I beseech You to take up Your scepter, to conquer the world, and to reign over it as its rightful King. Let your justice disperse your enemies; let Your Mercy pardon them; let Your Charity draw them to Your Sacred Heart.

Assist us all, O Divine Soverign, to do all in our power to spread Your Kingdom wherever we go and in whatever we do, think, and say.

For myself, I ask that You possess me completely and reign over my body, soul, mind, and heart as ablsolute Lord and Master. To this end I surrender myself to You, renouncing all other masters, emptying my heart of all other loves, that You alone, my Lord and my God, may establish total empire within me.

Help me, my God, to be faithful to You, to serve You well, and to love You with all my strength, with all my mind, with all my will, with all my heart.

Help me to be a worthy subject of my Crucified King, ready and willing to serve You in whatever capacity You may desire. Help me to spend my life in Your service, and to surrender that life whenever You ask me to do so and in whatever manner You may ask.

Live, Jesus Christ! Reign Jesus Christ! Establish over us Your dominion forever and ever. Amen.

My comments:

This is from a leaflet, it's a very old prayer. On the front it says: What the Sacred Heart of Jesus so ardently desires is love. Say this prayer to Christ the King "For And increase in love" every day earnestly and devoutly.

God loves us with an infinite love as he is infinite. He desires us to ask Him for things, this is why he allows obstacles in our way- for we often pray when we really need God. He draws us to Him as a loving Father and really longs for our love.

Essential Prayers for Catholics/Christians

Praying like this increases our Faith, Hope, and Love

Act of Faith

O my God, I firmly believe
that you are one God in three divine Persons,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
I believe that your divine Son became man
and died for our sins and that he will come
to judge the living and the dead.
I believe these and all the truths
which the Holy Catholic Church teaches
because you have revealed them
who are eternal truth and wisdom,
who can neither deceive nor be deceived.
In this faith I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Act of Hope

O Lord God,
I hope by your grace for the pardon
of all my sins
and after life here to gain eternal happiness
because you have promised it
who are infinitely powerful, faithful, kind,
and merciful.
In this hope I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Act of Love

O Lord God, I love you above all things
and I love my neighbor for your sake
because you are the highest, infinite and perfect
good, worthy of all my love.
In this love I intend to live and die.
Amen.

Act of Contrition

Oh my God

I am heartily sorry

for having offended Thee

I detest all my sins

because I love Thee my God

who art all good and deserving of all my love.

I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace

to confess my sins, to do pennace, and to amend my life. Amen

The Morning Offering~to start the day right

O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, in reparation for my sins, for the intentions of our Holy Father this month. Amen.

One of My Favorite Prayers~The Hail Holy Queen Hail Holy Queen Mother of Mercy Our life, our sweetness and our hope to thee do we cry, poor banished children of eve to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God... that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray: O God, whose only-begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech you, that meditating on the Mysteries of the most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen

I believe we all have moments that just leave us blank for what to say or pray. The prayers you mention are wonderful and accentuate a positive relationship with God. There is a time and a place for formal prayer and a time and a place to just speak the name above all names, "Jesus." I do hope God blesses you abundantly for sharing this with the world. God Bless!--Deb

I was just re reading this, for my own edification. Because I needed it.

I've found that even when one has a regular prayer life, satan still throws obstacles our way, and this means he really hates us, or that we are doing too much good, for he doesn't bother with the complacent. St. John Vianni was said to be constantly attacked by satan. That he, woke up the saint nightly and tried to rob him of sleep. According to history, Vianni converted many by his sermons where he did not mince words about the afterlife, and his giving of himself 16 hours a day in confession, to people who came far and wide, and if they held back a sin, he would know it and tell them.

In any case, when you are a follower of Christ, of course the devil does NOT like it if you are doing good. So even if you have a regular prayer life, you have to double and redouble it , apparently.

God bless all, who read this, may you find peace and joy and love.

....Do not hide your light under a bushel but let it shine for all the world to see.

      @Hendrika,

I agree. Sometimes at this stage, someone will comment on a positive hub of mine and I'll be like "Oh yeah! I should do that!" Or I might get a nice call or email or something. I feel like I have to pray thou when things get really bad, but I'd like to keep up a prayer life daily so that does not happen! Thanks for your comment!

I find that when I am not feeling well prayer comes very difficult. It strange because it is the time you need to pray the most. Fortunately God knows this and I know He understands.

Hi, I agree that sometimes we feel like we have lost it, if you see what I mean, I just think that we have so much going on in our minds, that it makes God feel a long way away, but if you go to bed and just lay there for a few moments, keeping completely quiet before going to sleep, and then just think about praying or just 'having a chat' as I call it, it can make you feel as though you are connecting again, cheers nell

p.s. I watched your singing, it was great!

you're right "groveling" is not the word. I'm glad you pointed that out. I will fix that. I was in a rush writing this.

I guess I have a whole different perspective and experience with prayer. I like written prayers from time to time, but I have learned that God is not interested in flowery, lofty words. I have learned that God is listening even when I don't feel Him. Prayer is not about feeling. Prayer is simply talking and listening to God. The best way to learn about prayer is to read the bible and hear the prayers of God's people. Jesus' prayers are recorded there too. Talking to God like we would a close friend or loved one is all that is neccesary. Even more so though, we need to listen. When I read the bible and meditate on a certain verse or passage, I hear from God. Sometimes it is an impression and persistant thought.

You are right though. There is a time in prayer to confess sins and seek cleansing and forgiveness. There is a time to simply praise and worship with words of love and adoration to God. There is a time to just thank God for all he has done. There is a time to weep and lament and pour out your heart to him. There is a time for intercession, praying for others. There is a time as you said just to kneel and/or prostrate yourself although I think groveling is a very inappropriate word, and just be quiet before Him.

We all go through times when we feel God is far away and his ears are closed to our prayers. We worry God is displeased with us. We are dry and thirsty and it seems to never end. God allows those seasons, but He is near regardless. His love never fails, and he never sleeps nor slumbers.

A gal named Nancy Spiegelberg once said this, “Lord, I crawled across the barrenness to you with my empty cup, uncertain in asking any small drop of refreshment. If only I had known you better I'd have come running with a bucket." God's love is abundant.
