Why Do Atheists Spend So Much Time Trying To Convert Believers to Become Non-Believers?

Updated on March 3, 2012

Why do Athesists spend so much time trying to convince christians that there is no God? Why do they care? I know why christians try to convince atheists but I don't know why they would care. As Christians, judging people never wins souls and I can see why they would be defensive if someone is pointing a finger. It seems as though prayer is the only thing that will work with a non-believer. You can only talk to people who want to listen. As for myself, people waste their breath when they try to convince me that there isn't a God so I sort of know how they feel. Maybe they think we are wasting our breath. I am not interested in the so-called proof they have to enlighten me with, just as they are not interested in what I have to say. Why am I not interested? Because I believe, period. Also, I've had way too many spiritual and supernatural experiences that have sealed my faith. Do I ever doubt? Yes, but not there is a God, more like if some prayers take longer to get answered I wonder if it is God's will.

Although I do not consider myself to be a theologin of any sorts, I do feel compelled at certain times to write what is on my heart and I am concerned about lost souls. I have made hubs in the past geared towards or for atheists but now I think I will only write for people who want to read and hopefully my thoughts and writing can bless someone.

I think Evolutionism and Atheisism are religions too.

Atheists don't try and convert people, they try and stop people.

The main reason atheists do this is because they're sick and tired of religious people pushing their own personal and private belief, laws and morals into their lives, via the government and politics.

Atheism is not a religion. It is the absence of one. Religion is defined as the belief in a higher controlling power. Atheism rejects that. "Evolutionism" is simply a belief in evolution, that is, a denying of creationism. Not that complicated.

I read your Hub with great interest, and I agree with everything you have written. You touched on the fact that everyone believes in something. That is true, I am a Catholic by birth and I believe in God. However, I know it takes more than being born into a religion to light that flame. Athesists is a belief in chaos or something less complicated. They are like us because they believe in something.

The reason atheists try to convince others there is no God is because they are in love with their sin. If they can convince someone else there is no God, or they can make someones faith falter it sears their conscience a little more. Otherwise their conscience is telling them their sin is wrong and they should live differently.

Ah "Dream On" encapsulated the difference so eloquently...we who believe do so with faith..."they" leave their lives to chance. Ain't no comparison! Mustard seeds to all! Joy and agape'

I used to be atheist and I would try to convert people because I wanted to 'enlighten' them because they were oh so stupid in believing in a 'god'. I wanted them to believe me when I said we all came from single cells, and I wanted someone to believe me when I said aliens visited us in the path. But being a christian now I don't really understand why I wanted to convert them so bad, it was just satan who wanted to make the faithful stray I guess.

I think that there are those who really do want to know. But I also think there are those that need to hear, even if they tell you they're not interested, and those that pretend they're not interested, when maybe they're actually looking for some answers themselves. We just need to know the limit, so that we don't 'Bible-bash' them and put them off completely. Sometimes I think that we just need to try and plant some sort of seed

You are right. I used to try to convince people that there is a God but now I just feel like if they are searching with an honest heart thwn I will help them. I am not sure if it is right or not ,but there are people who really want to get to know God right?

I couldn't agree more with your hub. Maybe the reason that they want to try and convince us is because it's their way of finding surety in their own belief, to get someone else to agree with their view. Much the same as we sometimes desire to help non-believers find their salvation so that we can feel like we have done good.

Hi Indigital, why wouldn't I accept your comment. I don't think I ever have rejected one. You are right about tthe middle east, I work with someone from Iran and we talk all the time. Religion forces opinions on people this is true. I personally don't force my opinion on anyone. I write about things that I believe and if people want to read than that is good. But I definatly know what you mean about religion. I don't follow a particular denomination but I do read and believe the bible. And this bothers some people. Thank you for reading and commenting. Take care

I hope you accept this comment, seems like a one sided argument.

While you may be saying we push our ideas onto you - there are groups dedicated to help and treatment of young children who don't believe in God. In the Middle East, you're beaten if you go against their God. In many communities, atheism is almost seen as a crime.

You cannot say we force opinions on you, when you force people to obey what you believe - or suffer major social consequences.

No Atheist wants to convert. Atheist want Theologists to keep to their family and communities. As long as the Christian right pursues the dictating of others reality, there will be people to defend themselves from the reality created from the religious right. Christians can't take their ideology to these extremes because they will result in Secular criticism.

gud one. You don't waste time with them leave them in the hands of GOD. Some of them has put their feet in their mouths and committed the unpardonable sin. Blasphemy of the Holy Ghost. I rather live my life as if there is a God than to die and find out there is. I pity those people and cannot fathom how they hate Jesus Christ. I LOVE THE LORD and no twitt in hell can deter me.

Kathryn1000, I agree many bad things have been done in the name of religion or God. Yes and we shouldn't be like the Pharisees I totally agree. Thanks for stopping by.

Many cruel, bad things have been done in the name of religion.I don't find atheists any more wicked than we are. Many are very good people but they don't hack it with The Pope or Billy Graham, the burning of heretics, the crusades etc.

You cannot prove with logic either the existence or the nonexistence of God.If you have had a geniune religious experience be glad, but don't let us get like the Pharisee but let us rather be like the Publican as Jesus wished us to be i.e. to be humble, and to be nonjudgmental of our fellow humans on the planet

Pollyannalana: Thanks for reading. People do get very hostile and there is a greater price to pay for those who knew the truth and turned their backs. There is still time for salvation for them if they call upon the Lord.

Dviews: Thanks for stopping by. Yes we have to put on the spiritual armor Ephesians 6.

Well said Sky321. To the army of satan ignorance is bliss, and trying to win believers is their crusade, their joy and their crown. They too need to win souls for their eternal home in hell.

That is why the bible tells us in Galations to "stand fast therefore in the liberty wherein Christ has made us FREE and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage". We are also encouraged to arm ourselves with the breast plate of righteousness because the enemy of the cross of Jesus Christ; satan and his followers - Athesists is going around like a roaring lion seeking whom they may devour.

They certainly get very hostile about this God they don't believe in I can tell you and I honestly think they have a hotter level of hell than ones who have never really understood salvation. Polly

Sky321: I have have often wondered since these people are "Atheist" Why do they go out of their way to even try to speak with a believer. How can they possibly attempt to address something they do not believe in, on an inteligent level???

Continue to write of your heart.

It is what we writers do. We find

both of like mind and those

      of opposing views. I expect

it the same for the atheists

      as well. They, too, are

      writing of their heart.

      Mine more clearly aligns

      with yours......

Hi sky... We are called to speak the truth to all but there comes a point and time where we need to move on. The best way to show our faith is to live it in our daily lives. "Cast not your pearls before the swine" comes to mind.

I spent much time and effort in attempting to convert a few certain people in my life until I choose to move on. They are still where they are but the seeds which were planted will never leave them. God will always have another who will come along and prayerfully change them.

Excellent hub and one we all need to pay heed to as we are all under attack from many unseen.

      Blessings and Hugs

Atheists I think are so determined because if they can get you to agree with their stance, that there is no God, it lets them off the hook for being responsible for their sin. You are right, atheism in my book is a religion. And often times engaging them turns to hostility on their part. I do not get on religious forums anymore because of their rudeness and hostility. I am for Jesus Christ and no one can change my mind.

You have a point there Sky321; atheism is a religion. I've seen the arguments between Christians and atheists that went nowhere. Why do people feel that they have to defend their religion all the time? There shouldn't be any arguments there because God goes beyond human reasoning. To understand God you have to have faith. That is why I rather spend my time talking to someone who will listen than getting into senseless arguments.

Beautifully said, Sky. I love your conviction on this. AMEN!

I, too, have found that more Atheists spend a lot of breath and energy trying to convince me why there is NOT a God, even though I never asked for their opinion. People will usually guess what we are, by our life styles, by our speech. I do not deny it. If asked then I am more than happy for the opportunity to tell of our Lord. AMEN!!

A hub well done, well said, well written, Sky.

May God bless you, today and always. :)
