How should I dress?

..”likewise also that women should adorn themselves in RESPECTABLE apparel, with MODESTY and SELF-CONTROL, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or COSTLY ATTIRE, but with what is PROPER for women who profess GODLINESS----with good works.- 1 Timothy 2:9-10 [ESV]

“..I also want women to dress MODESTLY with DECENCY and PROPRIETY, not with EXPENSIVE CLOTHES, but with good deeds, APPROPRIATE for women who profess to worship GOD...”- 1 Timothy 2:9-10 [NIV]

Clothing and how girls are to dress is definitely not a gray area in the Bible, as shown in the verses above girls who profess to worship God, which are girls who are redeemed by the blood of the Lamb by accepting Jesus as their personal Savior is clearly commanded to DRESS WITH DECENCY AND PROPRIETY.

As we go further I will try to break down the verses in 1 Timothy chapter 9 verses 9 to 10. I pray that it will a wakeup call or a reminder for every girl. But first we’ll try to answer some basic questions that might be popping into your mind at this very moment.

ignorance is not a virtue, it's a choice.
ignorance is not a virtue, it's a choice.

Every girl should dress in such a way clearly because the Bible says so. But I do understand that there is a possibility that not all girls who will get to read this are Christians and believes in the Bible. Well if you are one of those girls you might be thinking that Christianity is all about the dos and don’ts. So let me clear that up for your right now. Christianity is not about the dos and don’ts that are in other terms called “legalism”. Christianity is all about obedience to Christ not out of force or because we are “told” so but because of our love for Christ because He first loved us. The Bible is given for us to guide us and to tell us how we can obey Christ and to constantly remind us. If we are to do this with reasons other than out of love then you can definitely call it legalism, which is why I pray that if you’re reading this and you’re trusting in the Lord Jesus Christ we must always remember that we follow Christ’s commands because of our LOVE for Him. So what if you’re not trusting in the Lord Jesus? Well I can only say one thing about that, you need to trust in His name.

Why? Because He died for your sins at Calvary’s cross, He loved you so much that He gave up everything for you. He was willing to humble Himself and took on the penalty of death that we deserve because of our sins. He paid the debt He did not owe; He paid the debt we could not pay.

“For God so LOVED the world that He gave His only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have ETERNAL LIFE.”-John 3:16

“For it is BY GRACE you have been SAVED, THROUGH FAITH and this NOT from yourselves, it is the GIFT OF GOD--- not by works, so that no one can boast.”- Ephesians 2:8-9

I’m not going to tell you that you should dress with decency and propriety for your boyfriend, family, or even for yourself, all those things are just other reasons but the first and very reason why you should dress that way is because it glorifies God. You should do it to honour His name. That is why so many people constantly fail to “change for the better” because their motives and purpose for doing so are all wrong. If you’re not doing it for God then it’s pointless and you won’t have the fuel to actually do it successfully.

Remember that what God wants is always what’s best for us; we were never created to decide for our own and on our own.

Going back to 1 Timothy 2:9-10 let’s take a closer look at the verses;

..”likewise also that women should adorn themselves in RESPECTABLE apparel, with MODESTY and SELF-CONTROL, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or COSTLY ATTIRE, but with what is PROPER for women who profess GODLINESS----with good works.- 1 Timothy 2:9-10 [ESV]

As clear as it is girls should dress with respectable apparel. Respectable apparel means we are to respect our body and make sure that others will do the same. Take in mind that one of the greatest weaknesses of men is their eyes. If you are not to be careful and sensitive about this truth you will not only commit a sin but will also cause someone to stumble. From this we can already see how God is just trying to protect us when He says that we should wear respectable apparel.

Just remember this every time you are so tempted to buy or wear unfitting clothes; if it’s not respectable then it’s not beautiful.

.., with MODESTY

What a beautiful sight it might be to see a lady with great modesty! Not just on the inside but also in what she wears!

Modesty means leaving some for the imagination. Kidding, what I meant was to be modest is to dress in a way that is so pleasant to see and not in a way where you can already see everything. When you dress modestly people will look at you and say, “Wow there’s something so special about that girl”. Some may not applaud you for it but rest assured God will.

“But it looks so good on me!”

“It’s what’s hot right now so I need to be in it!”

“like OMG! My favourite celebrity is wearing it, I mussst have it!”

These are only some of the phrases that shout no self-control. Paul says that we should have self-control which means we are not to be overpowered by our very unstable emotions and other factors that triggers us to lose control. Most of the times saying “no” is one hard struggle but in God we will find the strength to say no every time we need to. Just take a moment to stop being so impulsive and acting upon our emotions. Stay calm, pray to God and do what God says.

Just because that it may seemingly look good on you doesn’t mean it looks right on you. Happiness and false contentment that the world offers can be so deceiving. It feeds our emotion and most of the time sings praises to our ego so we can be lulled in to its trap.

Don’t fall for the trap! Be self controlled and stay in prayer.

....not with braided hair and gold or pearls or COSTLY ATTIRE

This simply means that beauty does not cost a penny! Beauty does not need to be maintained by human efforts! Beauty is not something man can create. Beauty is one of God’s creations, and you must keep in mind that He put beauty into you! That’s why we’re all beautiful from the time we were born! But often times we turn our natural God-given beauty into man-created view of beauty.

Being beautiful is not something you can buy, though there is nothing wrong with an occasional pampering or a trip to the spa or salon but make sure you don’t forget the truth that those are not the things that makes one beautiful. Physical beauty is already a given gift to us, because God himself handmade us, but inner beauty is what’s more precious in God’s sight.

...but with what is PROPER for women who profess GODLINESS----with good works

The main idea of these verses is to tell us what is proper for women who worship God, those who profess GODliness. That’s why I said before how important it is to first have Jesus as your Savior, without Him no true change will take place in your life. It will only be temporary changes that are really no changes at all.

We must remember that we cannot compartmentalize our Christian faith. When we say that God is the God of our lives then He is indeed the Lord of our lives. He should be number 1 at all times. If He’s not Lord at one part of our life then He is no Lord of ours! He will still be Lord even if He is not our Lord. We are only going to suffer the consequences if we are to resist His Lordship.

Just keep your focus on God; He is the one who changes a man’s heart. If He can change the heart how much more change the way we dress. We only need to be willing to let Him change us. Submission then obedience bonded by Faith.

Good works—as children of God we need to abound in good work, not for our Salvation because that is purely by God’s grace but in our Christian life as a result of our Faith. Dressing with decency and propriety is deemed by the Bible as a “good work” for women who worship GOD.

To GOD is all the Glory! xx
