You Are Invited to a Pity Party

Updated on March 4, 2011

If you got an invitation like this, would you respond? So many people including myself have brought people down with their little pity parties. I remember I once had a Tupperware party and it was supposed to be a good time. One lady from our church ruined the party with her troubles. I know I sound cold, but I always heard her complaints and they were always about her husband. Plus I was a lot younger and somewhat less empathetic. Although, It seems like I may sound harsh, I do know what it is like when you are unhappy about something. In times like this, you want to seek help by talking about it. Unfortunately, she did bring down my little get together. There is a time and place for everything. This lady's husband was not a bad guy; he worked shift work and was tired most of the time. In addition, his hobby was recording Christian radio shows and didn't pay that much attention to her or least give her the attention she wanted. She just seemed so unhappy with the marriage and it was hard to listen to all the time.

We have all been there at one time or another, frustrated, lonely and desperate for help or counsel. I think of Elijah in the desert how he had his own little pity party. Actually, he seemed quite depressed. He even asked God to take away his life.

Passage from 1 Kings 19 4-8

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

I wonder what that cake was that made of that gave him strength for 40 days. Maybe it was made with juniper berries. This would be the first angel food cake. We may not have an angel bake a cake for us but we can read the word of God and pray to gather strength daily.

Until you can walk in another person's shoe or one day of their life or as Jesus said to wash someone elses feet, we should just be good listeners. Yes I would go to a party like that because by listening and talking about things that bother us affords us the opportunity to grow and find solutions from other viewpoints. Most solutions are things we never thought of because we are IN the situation and not LOOKING in from the outside.

      Love your neighbors as yourself.

      Sky,

Always right on target. Not too harsh, just truth. If Elijah had a pity party I guess I'm in pretty good company from time to time. But that's still no excuse. Thanks for the invitation.
