Zen Lesson #2 - Is It God?

Updated on August 3, 2011

Our Original Face

Our Christ-nature in Zen terms is "our original face, before our mother and father were born." God has chosen us in Christ, before the foundation of the world to be holy and before God in love (Eph.1:4) Our original face is one of innocence. It expresses fearlessness, blameless ness, flawlessness and pure love before God.

The spiritual journey is about becoming one with God. Sitting with Roshi one day, I noticed the alignment of our breathes as one in harmony--the rise and fall of two chests. It was an intimate moment. It gave me a glimpse of how we are all One. Oneness permeates my spirituality. We are connected to the stars, the cacti, the birds, the wisps of clouds. We are entangled with life. Simply sitting each day awakens the Budha-Christ thought, no concept-just emptiness. I expressed this emptiness to Roshi in "Is it God?" and he emphatically said "yes".

You are in a way right when you say the Buddha is the most misunderstood person in the history of mankind. He negated worshiping of God because he said there is no God. But today he is worshiped in Tibetan Buddhism and Mahayana.
