Zen Quotes

Updated on July 14, 2010

Zen is a school of Buddhism that strongly emphasizes on non attachment. Buddha is the most misunderstood person in the history of mankind. He always insisted his followers on being themselves, he was against the concept of God but the paradox is that his own followers has made Buddha himself the God. Zen Buddhism is that school of Buddhism which has understood Buddha.

To be a Zen Buddhist, we need awareness. If we get attached to zen buddhism itself, then we have missed the point. It's not a religion at all, it's a way of living, living a simple, compassionate life.

Here are few Zen quotes that will help you understand what Zen is and what Zen is not.

All conditioned things are impermanent. Work out your own salvation with diligence. Gautam Budhha's last words.

Let go over a cliff, die completely and then come back to life and after that you cannot be deceived. zen proverb

Getting rid of things and clinging to emptiness is an illness of the same kind; it is just like throwing oneself into fire to avoid being drowned. Yungchia

Whether you are going or staying or sitting or lying down, the whole world is your own self. You must find out whether the mountains, rivers, grass and forests exist in your own mind or exist outside it. Analyze the ten thousand things. Dissect them minutely. And when you take this to the limit, you will come to the limitless. When you search into it, you come to the end of search. Where thinking goes no further and distinctions vanish. When you smash the citadel of doubt, then the Buddha is simply yourself. Daikaku

Before enlightment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightment, chop wood, carry water. Zen Proverb

Zen doesn't confuse spirituality with thinking about God while one is peeling the potatoes. Zen spirituality is just to peel the potatoes. Alan Watts

Move and the way will open. Zen proverb

I cannot tell if what the world considers 'happiness' is happiness or not. All I know is the that when I consider the way they go about attaining it, I see them carried away headlong, grim and obsessed in the general onrush of the human herd, unable to stop themselves or to change their direction. All the while they claim to be just on the point of attaining happiness. Chunag Tzu

A lifetime is not what's between the moments of birth and death; a lifetime is one moment between my two little breaths. Chade Meng

See with your eyes, hear with your ears. Nothing is hidden. zen proverb

Just think of the trees: they let the birds perch and fly, with no intention to call them when they come and no longing for their return when they fly away. If people's hearts can be like the trees, they will not be off the way. Langya

Sitting quietly, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself. Zen proverb

To have some deep feeling about Buddhism is not the point; we just do what we should do, like eating supper and going to bed. This is Buddhism! Suzuki Roshi

It has been said that if you could become another person for even a few moments, you would probably become enlightened. So, strong is our attachment to the idea of who we are that even the smallest jolt out of it can have an immense effect.   Langya

What is this mind? Who is hearing these sounds? Do not mistake any state for self-realization. Continue to ask yourself: What is it that hears?    Bassui

A silent mind is beautiful and dynamic.   zen saying

You do not need to leave your room, remain sitting at your table and listen. Do not even listen, simply wait. Do not even wait, be still and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you. To be unmasked, it has no choice. It will roll in ecstasy at your feet.     Franz Kafka

Be Yourself!   Buddha.

7 billion people in the world right now.

      7 billion understandings of Buddha.

      Each one true.

      Each one not true.

      And.......it does not matter!

      Truth is matter.

      Truth is not matter.

      No matter.

Thank you for these quotes. I agree Buddha is really misunderstood. I often hear stuff like "Buddha is the God of buddhism, and Nirvana is the heaven". Which just isn't true.
