What Is Biblical Grace - Bible Study on Saving Grace

Updated on February 11, 2011

Biblical grace is God's treasures given to us freely!

Biblical grace is the treasures of Christ that are given to us without any merit on our part. True Biblical grace is absolutely free. I like the acrostic: G God's, R Riches, A At, C Christ's, Expense. As a Christian, I rely on God's grace alone for my salvation!

Perhaps the thorniest task for us to carry out is to rely on God's grace and God's grace alone for our salvation. It is not easy for our pride to give over to grace. Grace is for others; we want to earn our own way; we do not want welfare. Somehow we want to go to heave because we deserve to be there! This lens is a short study (with several resources on Biblical grace!

Bible Study on Saving Grace

Divine grace

A general definition of "grace" is; "mercy; clemency; pardon: an act of grace." [ Unabridged (v 1.1). Random House, Inc. 28 Jun. 2007. ]

To even begin to understand God's grace, we must first realize God is so pure and holy that, before Him, all sin is a filthy stain which must be wiped out. On our own merits, we stand condemned before Him.

Romans 3:23 - "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God"

Romans 6:23 - "For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord"

Some find using G.R.A.C.E. as an acronym for "God's Riches at Christ's Expense" to be helpful in remembering that God's gift of eternal life is made available at the expense of the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Here are two of the numerous Bible verses proclaiming the principle of Grace.

John 3:16-22 - 16) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17) For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18) He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19) And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20) For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21) But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. 22) After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

Titus 2:11-14 - 11) For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12) Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13) Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14) Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Grace in the Bible

Romans 3: 23,24

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

And are justified freely by his grace

Through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2: 8,9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.

This not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

It is not by works, so that no one can boast.

No Hebrew word matches exactly the New Testament word for grace; but similar words are

  • Chesed - loving-kindness
  • Raham - merciful restoration of a broken promise

Zecharian 12: 9, 10 (chesed)

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication.

They will look on me, the one they have pierced,

And they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,

And grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son.

In the New Testament "grace" is from the Greek word Charis (χαρις) which means gift

Jesus tells about grace - Luke 15: 11-32

Jesus shows grace - John 8:1-11; Luke 23:32-43

Paul writes about grace - Ephesians 2:1-10

The Bible ends talking about grace - Revelation 22:17

      Hey bro,

Thank you for this Bible study and getting the word out about Gods grace. I really liked that accrostic you gave at the beginning. Grace is at the expence of our saviour. Jesus left his Holy Kingdom to come to a filthy sinful world, fully aacrificed everything, gave His whole life while He was here in will of His father. Obedience even to the cross of calavery. With Jesus Christ as our Saviour we would have no grace and would suffer in eternity for our sins. Thank you for shraing the love. I am new here on Squidoo and have created two lenses. One abhout His saving grace and the other about His mercy endueth forever. I plan to create many more like this and on many other topics too. God bless bro

Thank you for this look at what Grace means for the Christian.

As a Pagan, I would equate that to the feeling I have inside when I am at one with the Universe. Living not in the past or the future, but right in that moment.

This, for me, just shows once again how many more similarities than differences our beliefs share.
