Animal medicine

Updated on September 4, 2014

The spiritual meaning of animals

It is believed that animals can be totems for us in our lives. The native americans strongly believe in the power of animals as spiritual allies. Each of us can possess the attributes of different animals. In this lens I will name some animals along with their medicine. See what animal you resonate with, whether it is on this page or not. An excellent book for researching this topic is "Animal Speak" by Ted Andrews. I have had my copy of this book for many years and refer to it often.

I am cherokee by heritage but have never embraced these ancestors of mine, though I do resonate with native american beliefs for the most part. I have learned many of the ways of a medicine woman and native american teachings in my twenties. I supported my teacher through her vision quest. I made my own drum and helped create a Grandmother Drum. I will put a picture of those drums in this lens. I also have a rattle and learned soul retrieval with rattle work.

Animal medicine

some of my favorites that I feel attracted to

Owl is a symbol for wisdom. Owl medicine is a feminine trait and is associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and magic. Owl sees the soul. They see beyond apprearances to the truth of the matter. They know what you do not tell them. If you have owl medicine you may have these It has great awareness of all that is around it at all times. It has predator vision, which means it sees clearly what it looks at. It has great intuition, and the courage to follow its instincts. attributes.

Giraffe reaches for the heights. Her long neck allows her to get the vegetation that others cannot reach. Giraffe is one of the most successful and widespread vegetarians of the African savannah. Giraffe medicine is good for inspiration and to reach the heights in whatever you do.

People who have Giraffe as power animals often know what will happen in the future. They have clairvoyant abilities where they see the future coming much as giraffe with it's tall neck can see what is coming and be prepared for it. Giraffe people should be very careful when talking - be sure not to say too much to the wrong person, or in the other hand, too little. Do not let other's words have an affect on you.

If Giraffe is your power animal, then just like giraffe you will have very strong bonds with family and friends, especially parent and children.

Many cultures honoured the giraffe, the Egyptians art for one, featured giraffes.

Dragonfly I see dragonflies around me lately. For a while I had one trying to get into my home. It would hang around my door. The other day when I was driving there was one buzzing around my car which was pretty cool. One of the biggest messages of dragonflies are to look beyond the illusion. Dragonflies relate to dreams and illusions also.

Fascinating!!! I tend to be drawn to foxes, wolves and bears. I recently learned in Bev'spapers lens that my birth totem is the Raven totem. That had a rather chilling effect. My son and daughter's favorite bird is a Raven and always has been.

Love this lens, love animals and am really fascinated with animal totems and animal medicine. I am attracted to dogs and wolves, and birds especially owls and herons. But I really like most animals. We can learn so much from them and I believe we can communicate with them telapathically.

I have had my spirit guide picture done twice (several years apart) and it is wonderful to see what guides I have and how they change over the years. There is always an owl drawn over my 3rd eye and this last picture also had dolphins...I guess we like a lot of the same animals. (:

I really enjoyed this lens! *****

Namaste, Aloha, JewelsofAwe. I think I may have written before... I meant to! Thank you for your feedback re my lens, some time ago. I have enjoyed getting to know you through yours. I have many Ted Andrews books, and asked my daughter just today for Animal Speak for Christmas. Never quite bought that one! He writes so well! I saw your owl images immediately. I have a Sooty Owl totem... she is very beautiful... I drew her with such ease that it made me certain that she wanted to be seen... I will include her in a lens on animals when I get to it... One day I will make a drum and do a Vision Quest. What bliss, watching Sky and Earth and the Creatures, with no need to do anything other than simply that. Challenging, no doubt... but bliss, just Being! Cherokee heritage... again and again I find a Cherokee connection amongst those I feel moved to connect with. I wish I could claim Cherokee heritage, but it is unlikely...

Though I am not of Native American ancestry, I have long been interested in the spiritual meaning of animals. I really enjoyed reading this lens. Welcome to the Naturally Native Squids group. Don't forget to add your lens link to the appropriate plexo and vote for it.

What a lovely lens! The Hawaiians also believe in animal spirits. My Auntie I'o, when still alive, was known for her ability to commune with the sharks.

I have never read any of Ted Andrews books, but read all of Lynn Andrews 15 or more years ago. Is there any relation between the two?

      5 stars!
