   If they don't then I'll give them a few bob, if they do I'll walk off and shake my head.

   Yes actually I do, but there are certain conditions which I have undertaken to follow in this respect;
   Children
   My policy is never to give money to children. They have many excuses and many reasons to beg, they may even be subjected to beating upon returning empty handed to their household. but i have also seen many misusing the money they had made. they get involved in drugs or just pilfer the money into useless activities. The best way to help them is to feed or clothe them. Money is for the children whose parents actively watch and supervise the spending.
   
   Women
   I tend to give the most to women. They seem to be laden with starving children, I expect them to be attentive to their children's basic needs.
   
   Men who seem healthy
   This again is a category who fails to move me. They can make money on their own.
   
   Men with handicap or very aged
   You must have noticed men without arms, legs or unable to walk for some reason and other like deformities. They seem deserving of some financial help.

   I gave money to beggars twice in my life. It was the same beggar.
   
   Six years ago, a man approached me and told a story about how he had run out of money and needed to go a place and I thought, I think I'll give him two dollars worth(in local currency).
   
   Three years ago, I was passing from exactly the same street. A man approached me and told a story about how he had run out of money and needed to go a place and I thought, I think I'll give him two dollars worth(in local currency).
   
   Some ten minutes passed and I realized it was the same man with exactly the same story and in exactly the same place.

   Yes -a lot of times based on my gut instinct. At times even if i feel the person does not deserve and if I have change I give alms with an inner prayer that the person should learn to do hardwork and earn his living.  I have deep sympathy for the condition but I feel aot of times they have not tried to earn an honest livelihood but resorted to the easy way out -begging.  Am I encouraging this bad habit?  God alone knows !

   Some one begged for money to a friend of mine. He replied that he don't have change for $100. Then the beggar replied that he has change for $100, how much he wanted.
   
   I prefer to talk to the person and understand his situation and help accordingly.

   in some cases i do but mostly i just walk by them. i will on occasion by them something to eat instead of giving them cash.

    Based on my experiences travelling in South America, I started to see that it wasn't always helpful to give money to beggars. For example, some parents, seeing how their children got money begging from tourists, would take their children out of school so they could beg full time. So it wasn't really helping those children at all to give them money - they were missing out on the long-term value of education.
    
    I adopted a policy of only giving money to beggars who clearly couldn't earn money any other way - people who were sick or disabled and would have received no state support due to lack of healthcare in the country.
    
    Ultimately, it is better if we work to help the economies in developing countries - for example by buying 'fair trade' products.

    Sometimes I give money to beggars. Something inside tells me the person truly needs the money and I move on my gut feelings. I seldom give money because it is often a scam on the part of the beggars.
    
    I was in a beautiful European city a few years ago and gave a beggar money. By chance I had to return to the same section of town the next day. To my surprise, I saw the beggar dressed better than me sitting on a park bench near the place I saw her begging the day before. Her child was dressed well and they did not look destitute at all. I felt taken.

    I have given money in the past.  It depends on the situation.  Sometimes buying them a meal is better than giving cash. If it shelter than I help find shelter....After all But for the Grace of God there go I.
