Religious people often look at everything through the lens of their religion. This can be very limiting. Atheists can look at the way things really are.
As an example, if someone commits a crime, many religious people say that they are making a choice. Because according to religion we all have free will. But if you look at reality, abuse and neglect in childhood can affect the wiring of the brain and people may not actually be able to control bad impulses.
Whether or not you believe in free will can impact how you look at crime, punishment and rehabilitation. For example, psychopaths who claim to be born again Christians may be treated favorably by parole boards or juries. The assumption is that now they will choose to be good. However, they may have no real ability to control their behavior.
Atheists don't have these limitations in our thinking. We don't have to make facts fit a pre-existing worldview.
