Should the public be allowed to sue End of the World forecasters like Harold Camping?
With false advertising being a crime, should people who advertise doomsday/apocalypse predictions (like Harold Camping who spent hundreds of thousands in ads) be legally penalized for failed predictions and the mass fear these predictions inspire?
Hmmmm... that is a hard one. At first I thought "Yes, people like Camping are crooks and psychos who take the money from good intentioned people,"
But then it dawned on me that the ONLY reason people like Camping get away with what they do is because the people that follow them are dumb as a pile of rocks.
So, I purpose this... If we can sue Camping then I want to be able to sue Obama as well, and Bush and Clintion for promises not kept as well,
The answer is no. People have the right to speak as long as they do not threaten others. There is no way of prooving that this person could be lying or not because no one can really predict or ever know when the world will end. It really should not matter because if it happened no one would be able to record it and even if they did who would be left to know about it.
No. Human beings have free will and can decide for themselves what to believe. Common sense and responsibility for ones life is still the way for people to live their life on the earth and with one another. What you sow is what you reap in this life on the earth and on the other side of death.
If false advertising was a crime you would be able to sue EVERY company in history.
Can I sue McDonalds when their cheeseburger looks nothing like the picture?
I think that anyone who lost money because of the prediction of someone who was ALREADY WRONG ONCE BEFORE. That they should sue themselves for stupidity.
Best we can do is just ignore it. Goes to the age old saying "let the buyer beware".
Is it wrong?... By all means, YES. But they are free to speak as we all are. We don't need to do anything about people that do such things because they are not going against us... They are going against God and His word.
I say sue him. He can afford to make it up on the next false prediction.

No. People who are dumb enough to take this stuff seriously deserve the consequences. It would be like suing Orson Welles for his "War of the Worlds" broadcast. Anyone who took an invasion of Martians seriously was already a lost cause.

No. He has a right to his beliefs, and so do those who follow him. He also has the money to fund his campaign.
No. It's up to the people to decide whether or not they believe him and he can spew as many predictions as he wants because they are "predictions", he never claimed them to be 100% truth, just what he was theorizing. -Shrug- In other words, he had thoughts on it and spoke them, and people ended up paying out the nose because they believed said theories.
no they shouldn't be allowed. religion is about faith and if you are foolish enough to believe in religious ideoligy, you should have to take responsibility for these beliefs. why people want to sue someone because they are babbling idiots is beyond me.
i would think no, generally. but i understand that he raised over 70 million from this fiasco. if people donated that to him partly because they wouldn't need it after the end, those people should be able to sue because he profited from his false advertising.
If they are located in America, then no because of their right to share their thoughts. Trust me, Christians don't want to be sued because their religion was tainted in bloody in the past and now they want to convert people. You see where i'm going? You can't allow that,it will cause too many problems.Let them keep speaking time itself will bring them the punishment of shame soon.
I will say this though, many of those people bring false news will make lots of money off stupid people for sure.
No. If you are silly enough to believe that nonsense than you get what you deserve.
