Is 'being happy' or 'being unhappy' overrated?

This question is not about being pessimistic but something that gets me thinking. On a general basis, we hear so much about the need to be happy all the time. We envy people who are happy and feel unhappy when things do not go our way. At a certain level, is this not overrated. Everyone goes through something or the other. Why can we not be content with what we have. Why the constant need to be the 'happiest' person?
