That question depends a great deal on whom the God is?  I'm a Christian (not sure what you are?), so the answer would have to be monogamy.  Of course, the world has so many religions and belief systems, that my concept of God may be of little to no consequence in other parts of the world.

Actually, one of Adam's sons In Genesis had multiple wives, so who knows?  Then again, according to the story of creation God only created one Eve for Adam.  And only one of each sex per species went into the Ark.

If we work on the unlikely creation myth, we have to remember the 'go forth and multiply.'  SDay an omnipotent being was responsible for creation, he made the reproductive system so that a woman could only get pregnant, no matter how many men she may lay with, at one time. Men over several days, can make several women pregnant, that means his idea was for polygamy.

To John, I am also a christian but my search for truth has no boundary or not even my religion can hinder me to open a new horizon of curiosity to explore knowledge as long as it is not for my personal interest only, thank you for asking about my religion.

You're in luck.  Jesus Christ himself answered your question.  When teaching on divorce, he refereed back to the original design as reason why divorce is a no-no and why, when God DID permit it in limited circumstances, it wasn't because he was cool with it, but because of the sinful, hard hearts of the people.

The key issue, though is that the basis for the teaching on divorce is that it violates the original design.  What was the original design?  Read and find out.  You can find the story in both the gospel of Matthew and Mark here's the links:

God's original design is according to the Garden of Eden and that is monogamy.  However after receiving for themselves the knowledge of Good and Evil they became judge of their own lives. The ability to create their own rules at the expense of dying someday.  Technically, the Bible never gives a mandate for monogamy but implies it's preference for man and woman. But it does give a mandate against  fornication and adultery.  And this is where man uses his free will which God allows even to man's own hurt.

Throughout history and particularly in ancient history fornication and adultery was punishable by great shame and even death.  So what did greedy men do to get around this "problem".  He introduced marrying each woman he desired to avoid the penalty for committing fornication or adultery.  Divorce which is common in our culture today was also very difficult back then.  From a man's perspective it was a bounty because there did not appear to be a biblical penalty against it. From a woman's perspective it was not ideal but it was better than never being married at all especially back then. From a family perspective all the children had a father figure in the house.

Why did a man of God such as Solomon have 700 wives and yet that in itself  was never called a sin neither was it illegal with the rules of society. The sin was his falling into a weaken state by accepting the other gods many of his foreign wives was bringing into the "family" (You shall have no other God before me).  Clearly polygamy was a normal practice back then. Men died young due to war leaving plenty of women alone. There may be good reason why God did not issue a mandate against it thou he clearly did not endorse it.  Just my 2 cents...

God didn't design marriage, humans did.
