I really don't think that church based religions were founded by lazy people. It takes a lot of work to establish something like that and an unwavering conviction. I also don't think it is fair to comment based on their intelligence. They did what they did with the knowledge they had at the time. Before science started to significantly advance, it really was more logical to conclude that a deity was behind all of the world's oddities. I do think, however, that hallucinations (drug based or otherwise) had a part to play in the origin of many religions as well as a desperate need for law and order in an otherwise chaotic society. These probably played a larger role than any supernatural force.
