I think "threatened" is an improper description. They (Christians) realize it is wrong and the origins and danger of this kind of thinking. "There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." (Proverbs 14:12)
Satan comes disguised as an angel of light. What seems good is actually evil is disguise, but one only knows that if s/he has the spiritual eyes to see. "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14)
"In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them." (2 Corinthians 4:4) The "god of this world" is Satan.
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils." (1 Timothy 4:1)
Unfortunately Satan has deceived and fooled many and the God may have given some people over to their own desires: "So I gave them up unto their own hearts' lust: and they walked in their own counsels." (Psalm 81:12)
