References, for example, books that are good reads when it comes to understanding the ego
Can you cite references, for example, books that are good reads when it comes to understanding the ego and relinquishing its control over our life?
Anything by Eckhart Tolle. He seems to be the foremost expert on the subject in the West - at least you can understand what he's talking about :-).
The Bible is one, though it's not an easy read. But if you look at some passages, like Genesis 1:26, Numbers 14:18, Matthew 26:52 and all the references to everlasting life of which Jesus spoke, you will begin to understand. Also, the recommendations for lifestyle are clues to eliminating ego. Basically taking your attention off of "notice me."
Another book that has helped me is "Way to Go," by Khentin Tai Situ Pa.
Perhaps the biggest influence on my knowledge of ego, though, was not a book, but a spiritual process called, Power Processing (Scientology). In it, I found ego suddenly gone, and I was 12' off of the left shoulder of my body with the vivid ability to see without my Homo sapiens eyeballs.
Only in the last few weeks (40+ years after the event) did I finally realize what was going on. Power Processing puts attention off of ego self (the false self) and on the idea of helping others. The instant that my attention went back to self-consciousness (that the light from the nearby parking lot was passing right through "me" and that "I" was not casting a shadow), that was when ego was resumed, like a blindfold of Darkness over my spiritual eyes.
Thanks for sharing, lone77star! Somehow your doing so led me to this article: http://www.awareness.tk/images/Awareness.pdf . We pray to be blessed with the same insight as you have experienced-our true self being supreme and separate from ego.
Thanks for sharing the ebook, Quirinus. Looks like an interesting read.
No problem, PWalker281! Anything in the service of awareness/consciousness or getting in touch with our true selves. It does seem like a good read; am reading right now. There may be other good de Mello books as well ...

Recently I had a discussion with a 20 something year old. He was saying that people of his generation didn't read books anymore. They opted for video games, web games, movies and music, social media sites and plain web surfing.. From my experience with my two teens, who are both avid readers, I...

What does this mean: "You will be challenged with leveling your ego in this lifetime." Does this sentence imply/mean that you will have a difficult time having a big ego or small ego?

Are you a writer who reads or a writer who doesn't read?Almost every article on how to become a good writer emphasizes the necessity to read, read, read. I am not a reader per se; I can't sit down with a novel and almost never read purely for enjoyment. I get all of my information from...
