Does the belief of endless misery cause the believer to rejoice with joy and full of glory? 1Pet 1:8

Dang, SOM. Let me confess and try to repent on this one. I think sometimes I get slippery in the Love category, I kind of back slide. I find myself feeling a little triumphant when real bad folk take a dive. The obvious cases of Pol Pot, Stalin, Idi Ahmene(sp) and murderers, child molesters and rapists, come to mind.

I think you do well with this question to remind faithers how dangerous that road is. And I think non-believers should do a gut check on this also.

Anyone who gets even a hint of happiness  at contemplating on even one other person ever achieving the state of "endless misery", ought to examine his or her own concience. It should always be our prayer that the wrongdoer be granted the grace of repentance and reconciliation.
Remember "there is more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents, than over one hundred that need not repent".

Wow how you blown this up and torn this apart. Misery is neither endless or joyful for the Faithful. But In fact what they are receiving of it;  proves to the Faithful in Christ. Upon the Coming of the Lord or the returning to Paradise of their soul. How their faith has withstood the firing of the devil. In others words that their Faith was True Faith.

As they say the Proof is in the pudding. A faithful steward or follower when Upon seeing The Christ the True Christ will be abundantly over Joyed.

Because The Faith They carried and the torment and suffering they bared, was In Fact for the Truth of the LORD Our GOD The Gospels Truth. As they hated Me they will hate you. Forgive them Father for they know Not what They do. The firing of the metal of the soul brings forth the purest Gold. Even Gold will burn up if Tested too long but true faith will be purified.

1st Peter chapter One: Verse 8 is talking about the truth that is reveal to the Believer when They see The Lord Jesus the Christ or Paradise.

Then they will Know with all certainty that their faith was indeed warranted and has served them well. But In no Case is It Endless misery or Torture for the true believer to endure until their death.  In Fact such a test when it shall come is only allowed by GOD the Father Unto His sealed for Ten Days.

All other such Misery Is allowed to the unbeliever until their death or their repentance As was in the Case of Job. Job allowed the confusing to linger so his Misery continued until God challenged Job to  answer to think.

Job Repented and did so in such a way he also saved his friends a certain death from GOD Almighty Himself.   I believe the Lesson was Two fold for Job. It shows there is None righteous Here upon this world and whose world it was at the time of his testing.

We must remember that these men were suppose to be the most Knowledgeable men about GOD and They Knew Not who was doing the testing Or How to end the test.

Also as I have said in the past Satan is given. Many, many chances to repent before his tempting of Our Lord Jesus. And here again we see as Job learned who his Creator and Father Is. Satan did Not! Not Even after all The Fathers teaching of the greatness of the Leviathan. The Greatest Beast upon the earth and yet it is so much less than Satan himself.

As Job understood that he was created and Not greater than the beast let along able to make the accusation that GOD was unjust to him.

Satan Could not make the parallel to his story

No the belief in the afterlife with God is why the believer rejoices.

There is no life in the physical death: to believe such is to call God a liar, for have you not read ALL the scriptures on death? If u r a disembodied spirit u aren't truly dead. Hey-  scripture says it, not me.

Good morning/afternoon SOM; there is no "endless misery" if this term is a reference to the myth of ternal hell, because there is no such thing. That would make God a merciless tyrant  and untrustworthy knowing He is never satisfied with an eternal hell, hence "eternal"; how can ANYBODY who claims to love God claim they truly love Him if they beleive that? They'd be loving a monster! Ask yourself: WHY do I LOVE God? Is ANY part of the reason born from fear of hell? If you love Him from fear, then it is not real love due to the very really great possibility of someone attempting salvation in their own good works instead of surrendering to, and loving, Christ. Many self-proclaimed "christians" are not living according to Christ; church and talking of Christ do not make you Christian. He gives HIS spirit to those who sincerely humble themselves, repent and truly seek Him. Jesus loves you, SOM and I assure you He is not the "eternal hell" tyrant that insincere "christians" preach Him to be. I would not love a God who did that: you woould burn a friend or family member of mine for all ETERNITY for b one short life of sin?? How many there are who have been brought to fear, not love, God due to this vicious, self-defaming lie?

I fully agree with you Terry. Such people have what I call the molech mentality. They believe that their god believes that those in hell deserve what they get, so they themselves also believe this punishment is just.

GOD is not Unjust Nor does He wish any of His to parish this is cause by the False one Lucifer who refused and taught others to refuse Repentance. All in the Name of Satan's failure to be as GOD the Father so yes 4 the sake of the righteous they must

This is how to sum up the god you worship. He created knowlingly the end results of most of his creation without mercy. He created them for his purpose and pleasure still knowing their endless agony and has the audacity to call it divine justice? Not

This is the image of the god you worship Dan 3:1-6.
My Father is perfect love and is unfailing. He is the exact image of His Son Christ. Christ loved the world more than you love my Father.

John 3:16 is my answer to that. but SON OF MAN.  Emmanuel is GOD with us as we are and under the authority of the God of our world earth GOD N Jesus R the same in work and deed but not body. Our Flesh is sentence to be forever with he that caused it.

Our flesh is sentenced to die one as the wage of sin is death because of Adam, not eternal torture. With that said, Christ obedience brought life to all mankind.

Hi Sword: I'm a bit puzzled by your Bible Reference. 1 Peter 1:8 (NRSV) says "8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls."

There is nothing here about "endless misery." Perhaps you are thinking of a part of The Revelation of St. John where it says that, as souls burn in hell, the smoke rises to heaven and the saved souls in heaven rejoice in the just punishment of sinners.

That is a classical Christian belief. St. Augustine believe that one of the joys of saved souls in heaven was to see the just punishment of the wicked.

As you can see from many of the replies to your question, many people, including good Christians, have a lot of trouble with this idea. Some can't imagine that those in heaven would actually rejoice at the endless suffering in hell. Some also believe that eternal damnation, itself, makes no sense if there is a loving God.

Sorting this out is very challenging for those Christians who believe that all of the Bible is an accurate recording of the Life of Jesus and is perfect teaching. Christians who's center of faith is Jesus Christ, and who see the documents in the Christian Bible as a human record, written 70 to 200 years after Jesus' death and resurrection, trying to capture the Greatest Story Ever Told, but doing it imperfectly, face it differently. If we find a passage in the Bible that seems deeply wrong to us, we pray deeply. We may find an alternate interpretation in prayer that we can accept. Or we may get a sense that this element of the Bible is simply wrong.

I hope this helps. Blessings and Light.

There is no such verse ANYWHERE in Revelation or the entire bible for that matter, that says the saints experience eternal joy from the punishment of sinners. "PunishMENT" means singular. Not forever.

`The reference is Revelation 14:11 But Your right the saints never are joyful over this Just punishment for these are the ones who take the Mark of the beast. The Smoke Where there is smoke there is Fire the smoke is Gone now Who created the smoke?

Thx, Terry & Sinbad, for finding the reference. Reading Rev. 10-11 together, it does seem as if the torment is "for ever and ever" and in the presence "of the holy angels and of the Lamb." (Christ) But no mention of saints, nor joy.

Luke 16:22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side.

Many Christians actually believe that they will observe the misery of those in hell, based on this verse, yet still will feel great Joy and peace.

ManticorE Pls read all Luke 16:19-31. Whole story makes it clear that beggar is *unhappy* that the man who made him suffer is in hell. No one is rejoicing *because* of the suffering of another. The chasm cannot be crossed but Hades may not be eternal

@sinman, aw, so the wage of sin is eternal torture as well.

It's all about choice. By rejecting Jesus The Christ and the "salvation" He offers you are in essence agreeing to whatever might exist in the future.  You are saying I don't want your free gift. But, then you and people like you ridicule those who believe. If you don't believe in an afterlife why raise the question? As Sid pointed out you are terribly confused by scripture. The reference you use is nothing about "endless misery". As believers we believe that "hell" is the absence of Jesus and His Grace in your life. Eternity is now. Transitioning after death is just a continuation. If you reject Jesus while you are alive you will realize later that you have made a mistake. The endless misery is the realization that there are no chances left to get it right... His In Service
