I like the Numbers 14:18 version of this idea, better. I think it's a bit clearer in its meaning.
The means of evasion is only temporary -- time itself. But karma will always catch up with you so long as you are trapped by ego. Why? Because ego is an action-reaction artifact of the physical realm -- a false self that is as vulnerable as anything physical.
The true self is invulnerable. If we let go of ego entirely, we are no longer vulnerable. We rise above the karma matrix of dichotomies. Only by returning to God can we stop the perpetual cycle of suffering that both Buddha and Christ talked about.
