It's simple...Jesus didn't leave us in doubt about how we should love Him. It's found in several verses in John 14:
John 14:15 "If you love Me, keep my commandments."
John 14:21 "He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me."
John 14:23 "“If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word..."
These verses are very clear, love=obedience. They agree with other passages in the Old and New Testaments:
Deuteronomy 10:12 "...And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul?"
Deuteronomy 11:13 "...to love the Lord your God and serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul..."
Deuteronomy 30:20 "...that you may love the LORD your God, and obey His voice..."
Joshua 22:25 "But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul."
Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon." (Jesus equates love with service)
In fact, John goes so far as to say this: your internal relationship with Jesus will always produce an external change in behavior.
1 John 2:3 "Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments."
1 John 2:5 "But whoever keeps His Word, truly the love of God is perfected in Him. By this we know that we are in Him."
So there you have it. It's like God is saying, "I don't wanna just keep hearing about how much you love me - just do what I say!"
