Simple answer - YES! And I did meant to shout it at you. What is unhealthy is the extent to which freedom is curbed. While there are things that can and should be hemmed in by law (even God had 10 commandments), by and large the health of a society is determined by the ability of its people to do things, to innovate, to take risks and to determine for themselves what it is they need and want.
Nothing so complex as a national economy can be managed from one place and, in particular, from a place like Washington D.C., a steaming hotbed of power-grabbing, bureaucratic ossification, graft and corruption if there ever was one. We should keep all our politicians there so we can watch them, but we should take away 90% of their power so they can't do very much damage.
Free people frighten bureaucrats, politicians and would-be royalty. To hold onto power, they feel they must give the people just enough bread and circuses to keep them busy and distract them from any plans they might have to assert their freedom.
