Do you believe a person's soul can be reincarnated?

    Why or why not?

No as an atheist I believe we get one run for life and that is it.
Just as we don't believe in heavens or hells afterlives are viewed as another myth by most, thou not all, atheists.
Of course there is no "standard" belief on such things by atheists and there are no doubt many who see things differently than I do. But I believe it is dust to dust and we better make the most of what little time we have.

Your point of view is shared by many I have spoken with. Also, I agree that we had better make the most of the one life we have...If everyone did, the world would be a sweeter place.

I believe in reincarnation, after attending quite a number of seance to contact my deceased relatives. In his book, "Many Lives, Many Masters", Dr. Brian Weiss accidentally bumped into reincarnation, while doing regression therapy on one of his patients. Being a psychotherapist who never believed in such stuffs, he decided to verify whether reincarnation do, indeed, exist by asking this patient very detailed questions. He was finally convinced that reincarnation exists. As Chairman Emeritus of the Department of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami, it took him 4 years to publish his book, as he was worried of being ostracized by the medical fraternity. Finally, he could contain it no longer and decided to publish it, come what may.

If souls do indeed exist, I believe that nothing is permanent and that there must be movement from one level to the next. And one of the process could be through reincarnation into this world. Actually, I did write a hub on this, entitled "The Soul World as I Understand It".

Yes I do.  I have read many books on the subject, including the Bible and What Jesus states in it.  I have also read the stories from the children who knew they had died, what, when and how they died before coming to this life.  I just can't believe that all of them are put up to that and making it all up.  There are way too many and in so many different cultures to do that. The very first book that I read about it was Betty Eadie's book, Embraced By The Light, Other books are, Journey Of Souls, by Michael Newton, PH.D, and Sacred Contracts by Caroline Myss,  I have also written a hub about my personal experience with death and dying, why we are here and how many times that we come back here and to other places as well and you can read it:  http://ladyguinevere.hubpages.com/hub/W … -Went-Home

No. Once you die your mortal life is over. God gives us this one chance to live our lives. You will live on in eternity forever, either in Heaven or hell. We do not return to Earth in another form. Just my belief....

most definitely - I have been the party of many conversations with those who have previously departed the physical world.  Great spirits abound in the afterlife where the zone is filled with concern for those who remain in the physical world.  That is why it is important for all Christians to follow the rules of the Lord.

Weirdly enough, my husband and I were just talking about this last night. I absolutely believe it and know that I've lived past lives. Wasn't it Einstein who said that energy can never die...it just mutates or changes into something else?

Your question assumes a number of things I can't be sure are true: Time is real; Space is real; a human lifetime is a real experience; human beings have souls.

Without accepting any of those, I do believe that all Life is conscious and connected. So, what dies when the body dies is nothing more or less than what dies when the wind quiets down and an ocean wave no longer rises. A body (of any person, animal, or plant) is a wave, a form of Life, which is the ocean. That Life is endless, within and beyond time and space. It is all conscious and connected.

This way of looking at it has two consequences. I find both beneficial. First, it validates all views. As consciousness is connected, we can experience past lives and be open to future life. As all reality is connected, a soul (if there is such a thing) has infinite possibilities of expression. At the same time, each life is unique, so the non-reincarnation views (nothing after bodily life, or a heaven/hell/purgatory model) are also possibilities.

The second consequence is more subtle. It is that, since we can't know, the whole issue doesn't matter. What does matter? Living in such a way, in this moment, that our lives and the life of the world and the universe are enriched.

This way of thinking is compatible with the original teachings of the Buddha. A monk came to him once with your question. The Buddha didn't answer. Instead, he asked the monk what he would do if he knew reincarnation was true. The monk said he would make his best effort now, for a better life later. Then the Buddha asked the monk what he would do if he knew that this one life is all we've got. The monk replied that he would do his best with this one opportunity.

The Buddha pointed out that the nature of reality, time, space, a lifetime, and a soul simply don't matter. People believe what we believe based on our experiences. Let it go. What matters is to live so that we create no suffering, we reduce suffering, and we increase joy, peace, and freedom from suffering.

I do not believe in a soul.  I believe what is thought of as the "soul" is no different than the phrase "(s)he has heart."  The soul is a romantic description of thoughts that embody the essence of what one is.  But practically speaking, the soul is no more and no less than particular thoughts of the mind.  And the mind is the body.  And the body is born from cells of its parents.  And the body becomes part of the earth when it ceases to function.

Practically speaking, reincarnation does not take place.  There was only one Thomas Jefferson.  There was only one Jesus of Nazareth.  There was only one Florence Nightingale.  There was only one Harriet Tubman.  There is only one you and me.  We, as we, do not come back.  When gone, we are gone.

Romantically speaking, reincarnation does take place.  As I said, we are born from cells of our parents.  That makes each of us a reincarnation of our parents and their parents and their parents ...  We are birthed from our parents' cells.  We are born of their DNA; information and traits, both physical and mental, of our parents and family members born before us.  In that sense, reincarnation is happening all around us.  As everyone born is a part of those born before them.  In that sense, we are reborn over and over.  In that sense, we are reincarnated.

What a wonderful and simple way of explaining! So, in a sense, the soul lives on, but doesn't "jump" frm one being to another...

This is a fun one. Absolutely not. Souls do not die. My understanding of reincarnation is that somethings dies and come back to life.

The soul does not die but the shell of the body does and we get a new body when we reincarnate, just as Jesus said.  We don't stop learning, but can repeat the same lessons until learned in other lifetimes.

Did U know that each individual cell is "programmed" to be certain cells?  Like Heart cells are prgrammed to be the heart, beating without the aid of another.  Same with Nerve cells, ear cells and so on.  The body is made before we enter it.

Eric - reincarnate means to "re" - again "in" enter into "carna" flesh - to return again into the state of having a body. So, yes, in those traditions that believe in reincarnation, it is exactly the eternal soul that incarnates and re-incarnates.

Thank you much Sid. Are we Latin or Greek there? One would think the word would be more Hindi in origin.
I thought our cells regenerated in totality every so years. I also know Christians have a notion of "born again". Reincarnation.

  13. d.william profile image73
    d.williamposted 10 years ago

Certainly. There are many who have experienced traces of retained memories of lives they lived before.  Since our essence is energy of a source unknown to mankind, our "energy" retains those memories in the afterlife.
We obviously cannot reincarnate as what we were in the past, or are now, because the vessel in which we shared our material world existence no longer exists after its usefulness is over.
All the psychics attest to the fact that many return for many different reasons.  This life is like a virtual video game for the spirit world. Think this is impossible?  When humans play their virtual video games they in essence control the characters they portray in those games.  Do we actually think that man is smarter than the total knowledge and experiences of universal evolution?
Any thought we ever had, have, or will have can be a reality of one kind or another.
This is similar to the argument that anything sucked into the black holes in the center of all galaxies is retained versus lost to oblivion when the molecules are destroyed during this event.  Material things dissipate, thought and energy does not.

I believe in reincarnation and so did the Biblical Hebrews and they did for hundreds of years..but few do now

BUT.. humans reincarnate into humans and never into animals or anything else, only one or two religions believe they do.

Reincarnation answers a lot of questions people might have today

We can only be this body now but you will have the same spirit because it lives on. Reincarnation helps us learn lessons and grow in each lifetime. We take on a body that helps us do that

With absolutely no evidence that a soul exists (although a definition might help) and with nothing but anecdotal evidence of reincarnation, I would have to say no.

What do you mean by the word soul?

Without language, can anyone believe anything? So isn't all belief just relative? Maybe it makes no difference whether reincarnation is real or not.

And yet, through meditative investigation and experience, reincarnation looks very likely.

I believe it is not the soul, but the person's spirit that can be recast into a new little human bean.  The spirit picks up where the previous life left off (after the person plays in heaven with God for a little while).  The spirit is located in the spine.  The soul is located within a person's heart.  Of course, the new little human bean must relive all those baby years, but eventually, the "reincarnated" spirit will continue it's journey toward eternal life.

For me, I believe in rebirth. We have to undergo through life after life until the day when each of us attain the enlightenment as I am in search of. It is from what I learn in life that we have to fully understand our existence and how we can attain enlightenment where we will live spiritually.

There is a soul that exists independently of the individual but which the individual helps evolve and become more refined. This being said, the individual does not inherently own or possess the soul, and only experiences life once. The soul accounts for a certain brand of past experience to be a priority in determining a new incarnate as well as one which best exemplifies certain issues that have to be worked out. The individual is able to access memories, facts, and figures which correspond with the soul's unique imprint on their present being.
