   I've yet to hear much of a definition. The one theme seems to be that he / she / it is an omnipresent, omnipotent, all seeing being that created the universe. Most seem to see it as a malevolent force, though there is no evidence of such good will.
   When people ask me if I believe in god, I don't, my first reply is to ask your question "what are you calling a god?". It usually derails the conversation since they can never tell me anything concrete. Next I ask where did it come from and where did it go?

   This question in my opinion will never have a definitive answer. Thinkers throughout the ages, from Aristotle to Nietszche, from Erasmus to Bertrand Russell have tried to encapsulate ideas and theories into a complete package which can then be labelled as proof of God (or more accurately My Idea of The Potential God) or not!
   
   Ontology, Biology, Philosophy,Phenomenology,Theology.....there's plenty of debating material in these brain baffling subjects.
   
   It seems to me that God is not in a formula or even in a faith. God is in a system of ritual and hierarchy. The concept of God is probably always going to be with us in some shape or form as humans need this immaterial, invisible, nowhere and everywhere type of Being.
   
   The concept could come from mankind's ever curious mind. Where did we come from a human asked one day? Answers 
   
   Aliens dropped us off on planet earth many zillions of years ago.
   We evolved out of an organic soup which was struck by lightning.
   God made us.
   
   God? Who or what is God?
   
   Nice little question. The latest science seems to point to a particle as being God. All I hope for is a world that can believe in God, form a religion around the concept, and not want to kill everyone else who wants to believe in and ritualise an alternative God.
   
   Ideally I would want the answer to be: God is neither a who or a what God is just God.

   God is the infinite variable and humanity's answer to questions it can never solve. Our brains can only handle so much information and trying to answer the questions of the universe can be borderline painful. So we filled in the gap. That gap has gotten smaller over the years, as we've learned more and passed that information down to new generations, but it will likely always be there. The difference in ideologies is that an atheist will look at all the unknown variables and say "I don't know, but we should try to find out" where as a theist will look at the same variables and say "I don't know, therefore god." God is the easier route as it excuses you and shields you from the pain of difficult, if not unanswerable, questions. If that's all it was, then it really wouldn't be a problem, but over time, that shield became a sword and started killing people.

   The word God is a symbol, a concept. The key is, what does the concept "God" point to? It points to creative life force that flows through everything in existence. An actual energy that exists even prior to all creation. If we don't use words, we cannot communicate. So someone selected the word "God" to represent that creative energy.
