   My father was constantly reminding me when I turned 18 I would be on my own. I moved at 17. My stepmother was the huge contributing factor.

   When I went to college and had to help pay the tuition and then the books - oh my was that a wakeup call as to how very little a min wage check could stretch at the time .

   I knew I was responsible for myself, and all of my actions, consequences, and I was on my own! I learned that when I was 9 when my parents divorced and they left me and my siblings home alone to fend for our-selves. At that moment, at the young age of nine I realized that I had no choice but to become an adult and take care of myself, as well as my siblings!

      This is a hard lesson to learn at such a tender age. My mother and step-dad divorce a year after I was married and it devastated me! I hope you were able to deal with the challenges and still be happy along the way.

   When I stepped on the plane at the airport in Pittsburgh and knew my next four years where going to be serving in the Navy. Even though my parents treated me more like an adult before that, I think that was the moment they decided I was in full control of my own life.

   I would say since the time I've been able to take leadership in certain situations when they required it of me or someone else.  Before that point (and still afterwards) , I have been doing everything I possibly could to improve myself: reading, writing, watching, listening, exercising, and the like, and that is what has enabled me to become a leader when required and to become an adult.

      It is interesting that you associate being an adult with leadership rather than older or wiser. If we have kids, we are definitely leaders. We also are leaders if we have others who look to us for example and advice.  Good one.

    I did not know I was an adult until I was over thirty and had six kids and one on the way. I had a sudden realization that other people depend on me for support! I was a late bloomer in every thing. I did not look like an adult until I was about 35, so that helped me live my life of delusion until one day someone called me sir. I was baffled! My wife was finally seen as my wife and not my mother.

    Being 21, I am technically an adult, but being in college does not really qualify you as an adult. I used to work at a hotel and now work in a Pizza Hut, and the 21 year old girl, stress on girl, is never taken seriously as an authority figure when I know more about the company than the customer. "The customer is always right" is wrong. I digress back to the question. It is these things that make me feel like I am still five, but every police officer that has given me a ticket makes me feel like an adult. When I had to call the insurance company about my accident, I was definitely treated like an adult. I am an adult when it comes to legal things, but I use the "girl" perception to my advantage and act ditsy to make a customer feel bad for being mean.

    I first realized I was considered an adult when adults stopped treating me like a child and talking to me like I was reliable and mature.
