Jesus Christ said," All authority has been given to Me in heaven and earth." So what does this Mean?

These words I just mentioned come from Matthew 28: 18 (NKJV). What did Christ mean when He said "All authority". What does this authority He mentioned allow Him to do? And with all authority what position does He (Christ) hold? Note: The KJV use the word power instead of authority.

This was a message that he was sending to His "brothers" through the two women. Along with instructions to meet with Him later so that He could "send" them out into the world.
So it is kind of an explanation. Assuming the authorship of Matthew the women must have told Matthew that this was said. Or perhaps the Christ did himself. That kind of is important. The later meeting in fact that did occur in Galilee. Confirms that what was said was accurate.
I think we need to keep focused as to the listeners and the timing. The women just got freaked out meeting that fellow perched on the stone -- Gabriel, I would think. And then were kissing the heretofore dead feet of Jesus. He probably did speak succinctly and with instruction.
Authority is really the right word. Jesus already had shown his power and that He was the Son of God and Man. Authority would  be more like the Centurion who explained that he could send soldiers out to do his work. So yes there is power in authority but not necessarily authority in power. Also look at the root context of such a word as we use the term author. Quite simpatico with the "Living Word".
I read all in Love. So I also view it as a statement to the women not to worry anymore. And to spread the good news and what will be done with it.

Probably none of this jives with most churches dogma. But it is reflected much in the sending out of disciples.

Eric- I a bit confused here. What two women are you talking about? You lost me here. The verse I mentioned is at the end of the book of Matthew. Thanks.

Sorry there I made a leap. I put 8-10 right along with 16-20. I do kind of see it as one message. Certainly the women had know authority to tell the Apostles what to do.

    Authority is a better translation.
All means ALL.  It means there is nothing that exists that He does not have authority over, the sun the moon, the stars the oceans etc.

Matt 28:18-20   And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Notice that  since all Authority belongs to Him to Him, he can delegate it as He wishes and so He has delegated the use of His authority to us to do specific things, foremost being the use of His authority to make disciples and baptize them, which he expects each of us to do for Him, not for some pastor or his church.  You (not your pastor )are to baptize those you lead to the lord and bring them into the Kingdom of God. (teach them how to be a CHristian)
There are many other things that We have the use of His authority for.
I will give another example and I challenge ALL to search the scriptures and find more for themselves.   A hint: anything that promotes or builds the kingdom of God is ours.
Mark 16:14-18   Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.  16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned.  17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;  18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover."
    NKJV

    Christ is God

celafoe, if a person alien to faith wants to fathom words given In 17"' And.......tongues", and in 18,"' they........recover, "'in common parlance, how would you put them ? I think, Christ defines the characteristics of a true believer, right ?

It means he has power over the inner and the outer. Power over the mind and external earthly affairs. The highest form of wisdom, knowledge, awareness and power. Ultimately it is an invitation to experience that same power that he has because he promised that you will do even greater things than he did.

Sri T- I just wondering if this re-enforces the idea that Christ is a King with all authority? Thanks for your answer.

What I think Christ was stating is he is one with the father. Therefore, he has the "power" over all things in Heaven and earth. All of us know that the Father, son, and holy spirit are one. They are individual, but still remain one of the trinity. It is hard for so many to conceive this notion. I would "try" to explain it like an automobile. It is one, but needs several different components to make it run properly. Saying this, the trinity is what leads to perfection. God the father, Jesus Christ our savior, the Holy spirit the great comforter. They are individual but are still one. In which each has their own authority in Heaven and on earth.

Jesus was the incarnate Diety. He was God in Christ. He was and is the eternal King of Kings. All of Heaven and Earth belong to him. He was, he is and he ever will be!    As a man and redeemer he was sent forth from the father, to fulfill the work of redemption. He was without sin because he was conceived through a virgin, of the Holy Ghost. He was the Sacrifice and the Lamb. he was the redeemer and the kinsman that had the authority to redeem.

Power and authority, in this case, same difference. Sons of God are appointed by God, and like I said in another answer, they are the bridge or link between God and mankind.

The Son of Spirit (God), is one with God and as such God flows in and through Him, not like me, let us say, but in a ceaseless, conscious and continuous way, 24-hrs a day, every day in order to manifest God's Light. The Messiah - for want of a better word - is like an emissary, let us say. Emissaries are the Light, the City on the hill, as it were, and have the capacity to help those who 'seek' or 'knock' on the door to the garden of paradise.

Yes, they have 'All authority' as they are sanctioned by God and exists purely for the Will of God acting in and through them, even if death may at times be necessary to manifest His name or glorify His Light. They are not bound by any plans, for it is the Father who sends them and they act according to His Will and consciousness. Hope this helps.

sorry but you are incorrect,  the ONLY link between God and mankind is the MAN CHRIST JESUS.

Hi Celafoe!, I think I get this but it seems like it is more clear to say: The only link mankind has with God is Jesus Christ. The thought being that God is not restricted as are the Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ not restricted.

      Cool Celafoe.

Simply apply what I have said to the Life of Jesus, the Christ. If it's relevant, use it. If not, let it go. I seek only peace for us. Your long answer was a very nice one.

1 Tim 2:5    For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus,

manatita44- My understanding of the bible is God gave ALL authority in heaven and in earth to Jesus Christ. Therefore, I do not know where you draw the idea of "they". To my knowledge this idea of "they" does not come from the Holy Bible. Thank you.

      I hear you Celfoe,
Matthew 19:26 - But Jesus beheld [them], and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Seems to me that that statement means there are no restrictions on what God can accept. Yet you do.

In an absolute sense if you have ALL Power, you have ALL Authority!

He has the power and the Authority to Judge the Earth and all its inhabitants.

Jesus the Man is one with (the Christ) the Holy Spirit.

note - Christ is a reference to the Holy Spirit, having the Power of the Holy Spirit.

Being one with God, he is All Powerful - having All Authority.

His judgements are without error and in All Truth.

Now this question "really" tests one's spiritual maturity!  First of all God is a Spirit and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).  GOD said He is THE ONLY GOD, SAVIOR, THE FIRST & THE LAST, THERE IS NO GOD BESIDE HIM in Isaiah 43:11; 44:6; 45:5.  Remember GOD is a Spirit!  He is everywhere, anytime, anyplace, simultaneously if HE desires!  He manifests Himself in different ROLES to accomplish what He desires for HE is "I AM!"

Now stay in the Spirit with me!  Because He deemed it necessary (because He loved us so much) to come (God) in the ROLE of a Man (Jesus Christ) so we (mere men) could relate or understand how we should live, to fulfill the law and so that we would have a right to the tree of life, He (God) came and died for us in the form of Man.  Upon his resurrection, he stated in Matthew 28:18 "All authority has been given to me in heaven and earth."  This mean that His Role on earth was finished as He returned to the Spirit realm where He left "all authority" (because He was in flesh form and you know in flesh form even Jesus was tempted by Satan) but withstood giving us an example of how we can withstand also.

Bare in mind, Jesus Christ (the flesh) was God (since He can be in more than one place at a time) and was now returning from whence He came!  While on earth Jesus was subject to THE SPIRIT which was not in the flesh (God) because when He became flesh (lowly) than THE SPIRIT because He was human and Spirit (God)!

Therefore, upon his resurrection, He returned to THE SPIRIT (no more human/flesh) but THE ALMIGHTY GOD which has "all power!"  I say this because if "all power" is given unto Him, ask yourself where is God?  He is right there in heaven as JESUS during the dispensation in which we now live - He is gathering "The Church!"

Continue to walk in the Spirit with me!  However,  according to I Corinthians 15:24-28 says "reconciliation will take place and even Jesus (v.28) will be subject to GOD that GOD may be "all in all!"

Hallelujah! This is deep!  This was not given me by "religion" or "man" but revealed by the Holy Spirit!  Thank you Jesus! "And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the MYSTERY, which from the beginning of the ages hath been HIDDEN in God, who created all things by JESUS Christ" (Eph 3:9)!  "Even the MYSTERY which hath been HIDDEN from ages & from generations, but NOW is made manifest to his saints." (Col 3:26).  I can't thank Him enough for His Revelation!  Bless You!

2Cor5:18-19 "GOD reconciled us to HIMSELF by JESUS CHRIST...To wit GOD was IN CHRIST reconciling the world unto HIMSELF!"
What part of that don't u understand?  "ONE SPIRIT" operating in ANY "GLORY" (JESUS CHRIST) HE desires;simultaneously too!
