It depends on the purpose. If it is a selfish purpose no religion is needed. Even if someone wants to help others in some way, no religion is needed. Religion can help because they already have behaviors and ideas of how to go about it. There are also tons of self improvement books going back to the 1800's. One can also meditate or ask the mind for their true purpose in life.
The sages have long ago revealed that to know the secret of life's purpose is to know oneself. To achieve this goal, religion is one of the tools and not the only one. To know oneself is not to know one as somebody holding a position, having an abundant wealth, assuming some title or name or fame, having a physical body, being father, mother, wife, husband, brother, sister, friend and so on. We have to identify that which is enveloped by these and a lot more but due to a great illusion, we cannot penetrate the real "us" and identify with everything else which is not "us". This is a great veil or great secret. Besides religion, an enlightened teacher, your own wisdom, effect of past karmas and above all, GOD's grace play a very important role to know what we are in reality and that is the sole purpose of our life. Though religion is very important in this endeavor, people like to be entangled in mere rituals ,penances, charities, prayers, fasts, pilgrimages etc. etc. that are only outer paraphernalia. These are only means and not ends, one has to navigate through them but must remember that unless real purpose is not attained, everything is in vain. All learning of scriptures, visiting places of worship and chanting GOD's name all are towards this sublime goal that is to know the "self". If this goal remains unattained, everything is waste and just useless. If besides religion, any activity, any thought, any vision, any incident, any posture, any guy, any scene, anything or whatever it is, if it enables you to know yourself and thus know the life's purpose, that is the way. So one must keep all options open and use one's intellect without distraction and aim at the target like a sharp shooter. Pity is that religion has been made more like a maze for most of the people rather than a torchlight to guide them to the true path. Nonetheless, the sincere and discriminative people realize the true essence of this whole edifice that is called religion and toe the right way without distraction. Blessed are such guys but the irony is that a very few people are able to recognize them. somebody can repay the loan taken by you, somebody can unburden you from the heavy loads kept on your head but to realize yourself as a pure soul, nobody but you yourself will be helpful to you. This is a journey that you have to make alone without anyone accompanying with you. If you read teachings of Christ and Krishna, you will not find a trace of religion of present day in them.
There are many ways to find life's purpose. And religion is one of them. Actually, what religion teaches us can be learned by following the more path of truth in our daily life. We all know, what is Gud and what is bad? Still, we hear the speeches of sages and priests. Life's purpose is to help the needy and explore ideas to help the impoverished. This is a long debatable topic, you don't need to follow one religion to know the purpose of your life. Just listen to the inner soul, that will guide you which path you should follow.
I can be long enough in my explanation on this topic, I have concluded this briefly.
Yes! But the big caveat there is that not all interpretation of religion (the Bible, for instance) is correct. In fact, I suspect that all interpretation is wrong. Only through spiritual knowledge, not earthly words, can we know Truth.
Life's purpose is wrapped up in the overall meaning of the Bible (and the purpose of all major religions, for that matter) -- the resurrection of the true spiritual self.
God created us in His image and likeness, and He is not Homo sapiens.
Very well said lonestar. Everything is hidden in the spiritual knowledge. It is not necessary to read only religious but to gain knowledge. The purpose of life is hidden in the spirituality. It describes everything
Hi everyone. Almost midnight here. Just finished a hub on life purpose so this topic is fresh on my mind. Seeing this question just reminded me that I needed to add to my conclusion that we need no skill to find our life purpose except to follow our greatest joy. The challenge that arises is to keep and maintain our life purpose. This I believe can only be achieved when we understand and respond to subtle energy. As one of the respondents said - You need to know yourself and as we are all energy we need to know what our energetic body consists of - I have also written a hub on this but as one respondent says - the Spiritual or metaphysical path clarifies a lot of things if you are willing to listen to your inner voice. - language is sometimes a barrier to understanding - so I call everything energy because that is what it all boils down to as core level. Know thyself, Believe in yourself, do what you love, listen to your intuition and your gift to the world will reveal itself. PS: Need faith to know that you are supported by a Gods(Higher intelligence) 'universal bank' when you have faith. That's what many scriptures and spiritual teachers say. Its true. Writing from experience. I hope this helps.

Is it to say what you mean? Act out what you say? Then see if you can find out where you went wrong and go about trying to make things better. What have you seen what works?

This whole section of the forums here is riddled with such strong emotions. I am not REALLY suggesting that God is an alien. Although, honestly, I have actually pondered that very notion. The real point is that every religious group on the planet (Christianity included- it IS a...
