The various media do not always show the entire picture. Let me give you an example.
One year, when I lived in Los Angeles, I received a frantic phone call from a relative. They were calling to see if I was okay. They had seen houses slide off hills in the exceptionally strong rains we had been receiving in Southern California.
With 100% of the news about houses sliding off hillsides, the perception of everyone else in the country, including my poor relatives, was that Los Angeles was suffering horribly. Yet, when I looked outside my window, the neighborhood seemed perfectly fine.
The news had omitted 99.993% of Los Angeles. That's how big a distortion the news media gives to some stories. That's how close it is to Truth.
That's one side of the answer to the question.
Another side of the answer involves the motivations of the rich and accomplished. I'm not certain how these are defined. By some standards, I am "rich," yet I have no great wealth, except a wealth of love from family and friends. We live from month to month wondering if we will have enough to eat. I am accomplished in that I have written books, painted paintings, illustrated movies, built websites and created software. Yet, the most important thing to me is that increasing spirit. Sometimes I fail with the spirit; sometimes it flows through me like a river.
Some people who have no such concerns for food, shelter and survival, like to talk of religion and things of the spirit so that they can be "first" in the eyes of their peers. Like the Pharisees of the time of Christ, some like to be thought of as religiously proper, knowing the accepted dogma with great skill. If anyone corrects them, they feel assaulted; they defend themselves and their hurt ego.
Christ said that it is more difficult for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. I can see why. Attachments for the "self" (ego). If we can love another as ourselves, then we have no attachments. We could make a billion dollars and give it away, because love is more important than the riches of this world.
