Do you think it is possible that a person who died is not aware he/she is dead?
When doing some research for an article, I came across the Freddy Jackson ghost photo. I have seen this many times before. The story is that Freddy Jackson had been killed by a helicopter propeller the day before his squadron had a group picture taken. Apparently, Freddy was not aware that he was dead and showed up for the photo. His image was seen behind one of his comrades in the top row, fourth from the left.
From what I've learned via automatic writing received from a niece who was killed in a train crash, she was not aware that she was dead and went home -instantly - to see if her mother had heard about the crash. As it was, the mother had not. She says she touched her Mom to tell her she was okay but her mother did not even sense the touch. So she went back to the crash site - instantly. Just thinking about it took her immediately there.
Some time later, concerned once more about her Mom, she was instantly whisked home again. Here, she noted that her mother was now very worried, aggitated, after hearing news of the train crash on the radio.
Again she came back to the crash site. Then, the explanation got a bit vague as she felt herself drawn into the next dimension. For sometime then, whether it was a few minutes or even an hour or so my niece, apparently had not realized she had already died.
However, being able to appear in a photograph is something far more bizarre. But just because we don't understand it doesn't mean we should write it off as untrue.
Tuitila Tom, thank you so much for this answer. The story of your niece is very interesting and I believe it. I agree that "just because we don't understand it doesn't mean we should write it off as untrue." Thanks again.
Within the context of reality I don't think any of us will be aware that we are dead when we die, because we'll be dead, as in actually fully properly dead. Our minds will cease to function and WE will cease to be, that of course means ceasing to be aware of anything.
Within the context of religious and paranormal folklore it varies as to whether the persons soul/consciousness is immediately aware of their death. Some believe that the soul continues, for a time, to go about its normal routines or attempts to relive past events or continue with future plans. Some believe that that is all ghosts are, memories, energy that is not actually a consciousness/soul which is imprinted, through some unknown means, upon an object, building, etc.
In some folklore it is the very fact that the spirit is unaware of the death of the physical body that keeps it bound to this "plane" of existence and prevents it from passing into the final form of the afterlife.
Thank you Titen-Sxull for your detailed and interesting answer.
I strongly doubt the veracity of this story. I will presume it is nothing more than what we today call "urban legend" and what was in the past called a "hoax".
It is a cruel legend or hoax, but legend or hoax nonetheless.
Thank you for your thoughts, mbuggieh, and taking the time to answer.
Yes. Have you not heard of spirits who walk around thinking that they are alive and in the job that they used to be in, or wondering why someone is sitting at their desk? There have been other similar circumstances.
You are right, Kevin -- these things seem to happen often. Thanks for contributing to the question.
Phyllis, I think it is quite possible. What we don't know about the afterlife could fill up several academic volumes.
They're either earthbound spirits hanging 'round for whatever period of time, or something mimicking them. That's a very intriguing case you have here. Unbelief in one thing springs from blind belief in another, so it is said lol.
Very interesting, Alastar. "or something mimicking them" is something I have not heard before. Thanks for your reply.
