Why do people let people get away with using religion as a shield to protect them from the consequences of their actions? For example, a religious parent can kick out a teen with no legal or social repercussions if the teen is gay or otherwise breaks with the parent's beliefs. Why is this socially acceptable?

I've never taken in or spoken with a homeless lgbt teen who didn't come from a conservative Christian, Jewish, or Muslim family. Non-religious people and moderate religious people don't tend to believe being gay is a sin or cause to discard a child.
There is never a reason for anyone to discard their own child for any reason. Unconditional love for one's children should never waiver.
