Why is it difficult to practice what we preach?

In my country there is a proverb: "Do what the priest say, not what the priest is doing". It's always easier said than done. We are humans and we easily change our mind, when we promise to do something.

The sincere seeker knows that we cannot move faster than Grace; that to stumble and fall is a part of the process. However, that does not mean that you should seek this.

Spirituality cannot rely on our individual efforts nor an individual abnegation, but on the descent of a Higher Light. The hands must be folded with the Heart in Surrender and the mind rendered helpless. Human capacity must truly go.

For this a life of spiritual practice is required: Prayer, meditation, selfless effort and a desire to serve our fellow man. Slowly and gradually, the inner Light will shine through and more will be revealed in terms of how to act or behave in certain situations to find peace.

We find it difficult to practice virtuous behaviour because we are not yet inwardly strong enough. We are weak, insecure, and non-confident, and also suffer from a lack of inner discipline, either because we do not truly believe, or are not prepared to wait.

We feel that it is taking too long. Ultimately, even the difficulty is a part of the process, and happens also because of His Grace. Embrace this; let go and you will move faster. In Love and Light.

The simple answer is we want to do what's right, but we're imperfect.

yes, correct. Still, we must bring down into our lives the twins of self-effort and God's Grace.

Moral guidelines usually come in very broad, clear strokes. Real life situations are much more complex (if not downright messy), with various factors, distractions and surrounding circumstances coming into play. That's a big part of why it can be hard for us to both recognize the moral dilemma we're facing and focus on the important parts when we make a decision. Besides, the wrong way is often the easy one, and let's be honest: we're awfully lazy!

There is a major difference between "life" and the "hypothetical".
One really doesn't know for sure what they'd do until they're in the situation themselves. Thus the old adage: "Never say never".
Ecclesiastes 7:20 KJV : "For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not." I guess it's true what they say:
"Every Saint has a past and every Sinner has a future." :-)

Thanks for commenting. The act occurred before the sermon was preached. Perhaps, the sermon arose out of a lesson or lessons learned.
