I mean, religious freedom is a human right, but is it wrong for anyone who isn't a Christian to have religious freedom too?
sort by best latest
But some atheists have condescending attitudes themselves, and a lack of tolerance for people who aren't "open minded" and "enlightened" like them. And one could argue that they secretly believe in God :)
I don't really see an issue with a lack of tolerance for non open minded people. The internet is a thing nowadays.
Some atheists surely "secretly" believe in God...unless they tell you they don't and give solid reasons as to why. Repeatedly. Alot.
Face it, Link - the believers cannot understand the concept of non-belief, no matter how many times we say it. We do not believe in a god or gods. Over and over and over and over and over and over...
True, as long as they cannot literally crawl inside my brain and change my mind, I am free to think and believe with my own mind. Thank you :-)
I think it's also worth noting religious freedom includes the freedom to change one's religion or belief. I assumed that included the right to reject religion and/or the concept of God.
Yes it does, Sloane! This country was founded of Freedom of Religion! NOT on christianity as most of the misinformed believe.
That is an interesting one Austin. Were there any atheist, buddhist or Muslim signers of the declaration of independence. I don't know the answer. I would guess there were both protestant and Catholic. But I don't know.
The religious makeup of the signers of the constitution and DOI are on record, you can do a siple google search to find the demographics.
Love this answer. It should be Best Answer.
I honestly can't even tell if this is satire or serious...
I don't think it is serious, Kayla. It's just the way Evangelicals are taught to think. Education is the answer.
Haha! As crazy as this sounds, this is exactly what I was taught by my parents, the school, and community from which I came. And Im sure other Evangelicals know that I am stating the true perception. As for me, I have deprogrammed myself. Im atheist
Deprogrraming works! I wish we could deprogram all of the indoctrinated ones.
Really? I wasn't taught to think that. I was never told that atheists were demons trying to lead people away from God. Atheists are people who just have yet to know the Lord.
Loli, Then u are the exception, and not the rule. Im aware that there are some Christians who try or pretend to be tolerant to a degree. However, I have seen more who are intolerant. And no, we are not people who are yet to know the Lord. What Lord?
Peace be upon you Getitrite. Who are these most and all that you talk about? I do not think as you suggest I must. I do not know anyone who does.
Eric, Then u, and everyone that you know, are the exception. Good for u!
The people I am referring are the Baptist, Methodist, Pentecostals, and the hordes of ignorant sheep who haven't a clue about anything except what some ignorant pastors spew.
Wow I was raised in Sunday School and I cannot remember being frightened into anything. You acted right because of family and out of love. Jesus was pure benevolence. Old testament stuff came in my teens. And that was with a grain of salt.
Thats your experience Eric. But to assume that this is the prevailing attitude of most religious organizations is from an uninformed perspective. I've been to many churches, and the underlying message seems to be hostile judgement disguised as love.
I was raised in "Christian" churches, and bigotry and hatred was the underlying message being preached. Apologetics came to be specifically to apologize for slavery, stonings, witch burnings, genocide by god, evolution, and all manner of hateful acts
You need to get away from stereotyping religions as "right wing backwoods Christian " as such stereotypes lead to bigotry against all religions. It's very narrow minded and unscientific of you.
Oz, you have no clue as to what I need. Quit trying to preach to me.
Austinstar, Of course you know those were not real Christians. All the real Christians are like Eric.It seems that your and my experiences were mere isolated incidences. Wow! I guess I just kept going to the wrong churches.Whats the chances of that?
LOL Getit - it would seem that out of all the 100s of churches we went to, at least one would have interpreted the bible correctly, right? I guess we really need to go to Eric's church to learn about true Christians.
I'm surprised you haven't a heart attack, Austinstar, with all your negativity.
If someone isn't leading someone toward God, they must be leading the away. Right? You are either for or against God. You are now against Him. People can "teach" whatever, but hatred is not taught in the Bible. Maybe these people misled you about God
Wow the negative view of life is just amazing. How do you even get up in the morning?
I open my eyes and get up same as you do. Why do you think I am "negative". I grew up in a "christian" environment. This is what you teach. Your bible is so full of hate and war and killing and injustice that I cannot stand to read it.
And it is amazing that these attitudes still prevail to this day. Ergo, all candidates running for the highest offices have to, at least, pretend to believe in childish fairy tales, or be deemed un-electable. And Steve Harvey called atheists idiots.
I don't know what kind of Christian environment you grew up in, but I was never taught to hate people who were different from me. Maybe that's Islam, but not Christianity.
It's certainly Christianity as well...to what degree is debatable though.
Austin, you have no idea what I teach or what I was taught. But if I was taught like you I would be atheist also. Fair enough?
That is fair! Eric. At last, an honest answer from a christian!
Yes Austin -- I would not be a Christian if my focus was on the crap. Other Christians get upset with me but I do a strict theological diet of "Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." from 1 john 4:8
Eric, I have a question about your 1 John 4:8 quote. Just out of sheer curiosity -- I know love very well (I don't have enough space to type the explanation I wanted to type), but I happen to be atheist -- what are your thoughts on that topic?
Oh I am of an opinion. I have to teach my young children about God. That is a man thing. I do not need to teach them about love, that is a man thing. Be cool and do not see God. but be cool and feel the love. It binds us together. I love, you love.
Maybe you don't know what real love is? Just a thought.
I question this stance as Eric did. Hate filled attitudes do nothing but eat away at the hater. Christ's message was to love those you consider sinners and pray for them.
We are lucky or blessed to have such open dialogue. It is good and what is the highest of our endeavors.

My mother taught me that people who have trouble with finding the proper words to express themselves resort to the lowest common denominator in language - cussing, I have found that it can be useful. Yours is just to antagonize. An excellent use.
So all you got out of this comment is the "f" word. Don't bother to address the real subject matter.
SO....by definition, Athiests ARE anti-God, and anti-Christ. Is that not correct? I'm not talking about unbelievers, but self proclaimed Athiests. There is a difference
An unbeliever is an atheist by the very definition is it not?
Now if you mean anti theist, you would be closer to the mark. Not all atheists are anti theist, but just about every anti theist is an atheist.
No...an unbeliever may be someone who really doesn't know what they believe. An Atheist is someone who CHOOSES to say, "There is no God". It's almost a separate, godless religion.
That's because you are not paying attention to reality.
The Christians hate Atheist deal is now a rallying cry. A lot of fluff and not much truth to it. Sure there might be some but there are whackos in every crowd just look around.
I believe you just proved my point. It's not the Christians hating Atheists, it's the other way around.
I am looking for a Christian that hates atheists. I just posted a question looking for someone. I do not think there are any except for maybe a whacko or two. It just does not make any theological sense. I think it is a made up fiction.
Ted Nugent. Duck Dynasty guys, Westboro Baptist Church, Pat Robertson, Chuck Norris, Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, I could go on. Now you start naming athiests that hate Christians.
I didn't know they were 'Christian'! I certainly wouldn't call the majority of them that! I know it's a big 'votecatcher' in the US but 'by their fruits you'll know them' I think Jesus said?
Gee, who couldn't see that answer coming? "Those are not real christians!" You people make me laugh.
There was a woman somewhat recently who beat and robbed a disabled guy after he told her he was an atheist...
Any details past that though I have not bothered to check up on again, do what you will.
Glad you found it funny. I don't! I tend to agree with Pope Francis on this. If they're not willing to try to live up to the teaching they shouldn't use the name!
I certainly agree! If only Christians would live up to Jesus and his teachings, then I wouldn't have an issue. It's only the "bad" Christians that should not use the Christian designation! How to tell them apart?
Austinstar, what you do not realize is that no one is perfectly good, or lives up to the teachings of Jesus. All people are sinners, so yes, Christians can be poorly behaved at times. Without Jesus's blood, no one is worthy.
That's why I put the quote from Jesus in! (Can't remember the exact verse) look for the fruit, we're all human and blow it at times but those consistently spouting 'bad fruit' avoid!
Why do you believe that people "without Jesus blood" are unworthy? You are passing an opionated judgement on non-Christians and won't even admit it. I believe that humanity doesn't need that judgement. It is hateful.
I believe we broke trust with God in Eden, but God loves Humanity enough to do something about it, if he loves us that much then shouldn't I?
I'd need a half dozen hubs to deal with it. I'd say look up Eric's hubs as they're big on Love!
Austin -- Whoa there that unworthy stuff is not about hate at all. Look it up.
Give it up. You are not going to change my mind, and I am not going to change yours. I am done. Unfollowing.
Oh no Austin you did change my mind. Probably not how you would have wanted to.
It's ironic how you're saying Christians hate atheists and here you are attacking Christians left and right.
I think not ironic but hypocritical in the most fantastic display. But that is Austin - let her be.
Very well done answer
I dont think this could be verified by the Bible, unless you just pretend that it says just what you desire it to say. Jesus clearly talks about a different God in the New Testament, than in the Old, but says they are the same. This makes no sense..
I'm not sure what you think "can't be verified by the Bible". Most people, especially preachers, spend so much time complicating the simple. I don't understand it all myself. The part about the Father/Child relationship is almost common sense to me.
As a father, I would never allow my son to be killed just to appease a savage blood offering, that I myself put into place, when I have all the power to change that rule. What kind of father/child relationship is that?
Well, Getitrite, we were taught about the Trinity...the Father, The Son, and the Holy Ghost. The logic that all three were one is difficult, but it's what we were taught. IF they three were one, Then God sent Himself to die. It's what I was taught.
