Religion: How important is the concept of self-sacrifice in Protestant vs. Catholic theologies?

I ask because it seems like the idea of self-sacrifice is important to being a person of moral conviction. The death of Jesus is the ultimate symbol of self-sacrifice for Christians to model, yet this seems to be lessened in most Protestant religious traditions.
