In your experience would you say this physical finding is an apt metaphor to describe the relationships we have with family and relatives over non blood relatives, more often than not?
Not in a religious sense. The sentence can be used to imply that we should love our own more, but the enemy can come from the family, and good will or empathy, from someone you hardly know.
