Because we're not a-holes?
Like, I'm not sure you can get any more straightforward than that lol.
Since atheists make up the lowest percentage of the prison population it would appear that the answer is that they are more inclined to be moral than theists.
Why? No one really needs ancient books to tell them how to conduct themselves as decent people.
Yes, of course.
Because morality is not exclusive to religion. If the only reason you have morals is because you're afraid of going to hell then I'd argue that your morals are not really that strong. So, for most people it runs much deeper than that. And we're all people, after all.
I think that religion does have its own exclusive "morals" that I, as an atheist, don't agree with... like I don't think having sex before marriage is immoral. I think that's a frivolous thing to dictate and regard in such a serious manner, and I think individuals should be able to make that decision themselves without judgment.
But as far as things like being kind, not causing harm, having compassion, etc. - I think those are generally human morals and not religious ones.
As a concept? Yes. As an absolute? No. What is moral for one person/species isn't necessarily moral for the next. The closest we can come to a consensus is a morality for our one species, forged out of survival and refined by our higher intelligence and awareness.
Everyone has their own moral code or sense of what is fair.
Most human beings have the ability to empathize with others. They also know how they want to be treated which makes it possible to treat others in the same manner. Do unto others as you would them do unto you is universal.
Anyone who is nice to people and obeys laws only because they fear going to hell is probably not a good person at heart.
Truth be told everyone is born an atheist! ("born into sin")
(Until they're taught religion. Christians are made not born.)
Yes, Phoenix, they do. Indeed they exercise it every day in order to survive; to live in this world of ours. Some things are challengeable, but many aren't. If you keep walking the street naked, sooner or later, someone will pick you up, a policeman, most likely.
Atheist have Hearts like you and me, and some better Hearts or should I say more mature hearts. They care for their loved ones; humanity; offer to good causes.... A cold Heart cannot do these things.
I hope that you know, though, that Spirituality is higher than the moral law, which can and has often been broken, for a Higher Cause.

Do you think religion compels morality, or does morality determine religion?Obviously the relationship is somewhat multi-directional for most people, but I'm wondering which you think is more powerful. Do people usually choose a religion that aligns with their preexisting morality? Or do they...

Why do religious people often insist that religion is what creates moral behavior? As an agnostic/atheist who works hard to do the right thing every day I find this insulting and ridiculous. After all, if prayer and religious beliefs equaled morals there would be no controversy with priests...

Atheists sometimes claim that & they do have some reason for such claims. Whats your views on this? & WHY?Remember, exceptions should not be examples. We are talking about the majority of the group not individuals.

Why is it assumed that Morals are dictated by Religion? Doesn't that scare you?It is mentioned a lot that Morals are dictated by Religion, and the inference (or the direct statement occasionally) is that therefore Atheists are immoral. What makes people think this? I'm curious. Has anyone...

Can morality exist without a divine authority?Without absolutes who has the authority to establish moral boundaries? If there is no divine standard, can there be such a thing as morality or right and wrong?

Do you believe religion is needed for morality? Is the bible the only guide to morality? If you believe these things, do you really think you would go around commiting crimes and immoral acts if the bible didn't tell you not to? I actually give (most) people more credit than that, don't you? If this...
