The main problem is that Religion has a primary job even if we don't wish to admit it...most people are too busy trying to work and survive to spend time greatly in pursuit of knowledge, spiritual pursuits, or healing psychologically, and one day all of us will die (no matter what our religious beliefs). So religion has a primary goal preparing us to reckon with our fear of our mortality and to reconcile with our life and it's fate or karma if you will.
With that in mind, these are not the average young persons concerns nor do most even worry about such issues until they are older. Religion (and I am definately not a Chrisitan) has always failed in this capacity because it is not based on the needs of the living as much as the preparedness of an afterlife.
Youth is meant to disagree with maturity. And the young almost always win, for the old die first. A little sad, but it the the way that is probably best for human evolution.
