There is no hard and fast rule as you can't. Abraham Maslow the great psychologist ventured into spiritualism and has in a very short time before his death introduced concepts that speak about a very intense level of spiritual experience. These are fascinating facts, but  rather un popular. Some of Louie Giglio's videos on Utube will dispell the darkness.

They both can, the problem more often is that they won't.

Often it's because one goes against the fundamental beliefs of the other.

There is one here on HubPages who refuses to believe that there is anything at all in the paranormal. Nothing you can say to him will make him change his mind either.

I think it's because for the scientist, there is a need for empirical evidence and that's rarely possible with things like the paranormal or spirituality.

The same can be said in reverse for spiritualists who don't need anything empirical, but are prepared to believe something intangible. However, it is possible to get a spiritualist to believe that scientific things are not always the work of a higher power.

Scientist rely on facts to come to their conclusions. Spiritualist live their lives guided by faith. Usually the two do not combine too well.

A scientist may think or believe in something, but until they can prove it with physical evidence they will not accept it as truth and will often times even refuse to consider the possibility of (its) existence.
