Why do you ask? If you need spititual guidance why not consult a theologian in person?
If you are looking for a atheist, agnostic, or humanist, approach why not ask an expert on one of those issues in person?
And by the way, Thomas Paine was a founding father of America, a signer of the Declaration of Independance, and he was also a Deist. That was 234 years ago. He was not a churchgoer.
Also note that not all wars and atrocities are in the name of religion-The so-called "free-thinkers" generally don't want to allow you the same privilege. They are quick to tell us how many atrocities throughout time have been committed in the name of religion. A statement that might lead you to think that only religious zealotry is the cause of mans atrocities, but wait a minute......How many atrocities (in the last century) have been committed by atheists? Ever hear of Stalin? It's estimated that as many as 5,000,000 died under the free thinking dictatorship that was Stalin's Soviet communism. I won't even go into Mao, Pol Pot, or Kim Jong-il. Suffice it to say that when the so-called free thinkers come to power they are satisfied at nothing less than a forcefully imposed belief that they hold superiority. Sure, your free to think, just as long you think what they tell you to!
