    In the world there is darkness.  Walking in darkness means you cannot see where you are going.  It is the same as being blind.  It takes light to make darkness flee.

    The light of the world is the person who shines brightness, exposes darkness and opens blinded eyes to see.  His name is Jesus and He gave the commandment to the church to shine the light and sound the trumpet to the world of darkness.

    The phrase was created by Jesus as this statement reveals:

    John 8:12

    Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

    Here's a further discussion of "light":

    Philippians 2:15

    That ye may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;

    Here's a further discussion of "darkness":

    John 3:19

    And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.

    Jesus is the light of the world and we have been called to reflect His light. The world is in darkness because of sin and many people have lost their way because they live in the darkness of sin.

    Matthew 5:16 reminds us, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven." That should be our ultimate goal as lightbearers, to light this world of darkness by letting others know there is a God that loves them, One who will forgive their sins.

    Some people think they have to do great things in order to be a light in this world, but that is not so. Our light doesn't have to be big to be effective. Even the smallest candle can dispel darkness. We should do what we can to help others, using the gifts God has given us to make the darkness go away. If we can bring hope and encouragement to even one soul, God is pleased and His name is glorified.

    I agree totally with SirDent, DrDeanCrosby, and n_sightful. Surely Jesus IS the light of the world. The Holy Spirit which dwells within each believer allows us to let "our light so shine before men."  We are to be salt and light to the lost (unbelievers) of the world.  Our hope being that others will see the light and be drawn to it.  Come to the light (Jesus) and accept what He has to offer (eternal life), for those who will repent and place their faith and trust in Him.

    No. None of us can know that. It is not our place. To think we know such a thing is hubris or psychotic delusions.
